| You know, when my girls have their bunnies on leashes we have to try to make sure there arent a lot of people around because that attracts EVERYONE!! We went to the park once to let the bunnies run around with girls in tow and this guy just walked up and picked one up and said its ok, I have bunnies. I told him its not okay, this one isnt yours... he didnt get the idea and we had a very hard time convincing him the buns were here to run, not sit in his arms on a picnic bench.
So.... I think its really anything small, people just think its all good to pick up anything they can... good thing wild life runs away!!!!! |

you learn to be vigilant, and firm. "put her down shes not yours" or "she doesn't like that." Tippy is scared when people pick her up and people just go on and on about what a love bug she is.
they also reach and out and pet at random. Alot. | the smallest dog i've ever had was a cocker spaniel, not quite small enough to be picked up like that... i always trained all of my dogs some cue to greet strangers and all were very tolerant of petting, but i really hate it when someone assumes that your dog wants them too... they are convinced that if they can just pet the dog, the dog will know they are good... *sigh* no, petting the dog is for YOUR benefit, not the dog's... LEAVE IT ALONE! sheesh, what the heck is wrong with people that they think this is ok???? |

| Chili's body language SCREAMS "i don't like that' (petting) and people are just oblivious.
I had a guy ask "is he socable?" and when i said no he started making fun of him.
I also get the "get a real dog" comment ALOT. |

| Aw, I hate that when people put down other peoples dogs just because they dont like that breed regardless if the dog is being good. NEVER tell the owner on top of that!! Social edicate!! I may not be able to spell it but at least I have it. People really need to get it... |

Not to long ago at Tractor Supply, some guy with a with golden commented to my husband about Penny. He said something to the effect of women always picking little girly dogs, and that it must be embarassing to have to walk around with one. She had a purple sweater on. It's just a bit chilly here in PA for a minature pinscher.
Dan said that he told the guy that Penny has more attitude than his golden and that Penny could take on his dog anytime! Guys!
The sad thing is that she probably could! When she was with her foster family she bossed around 2 dobies and a standard poodle. So if she can boss 2 dobies, she should be able to boss around a golden.
Seriously though, I wish people wouldn't treat small dogs like stuffed animals. I wish that they would treat them like they would any larger dog. They really aren't that different. And actually, I think that most small dogs have more attitude than many of the larger dogs. Mine certainly don't know that they are small. |

| i think that dogs are dogs are dogs, tho i did (sorta still do, sorry ) have a small dog/big dog thing BUT in my defense, i am realizing more and more that it is the people not the dogs... people have a tendency to treat little furry things a certain way, but a big dog that is potentially very dangerous, tends to get slightly more respect in that regard, but only just... i do like a dog that i feel is safe where i live (not an easy lunch for a coyote that would be devastating) |

| You can also tell people that your dog is in a training. This should stop them from messing with your dog.
