sometimes i am soooo glad i don't have a little dog!

i've never really been one for little dogs, i grew up with big dogs, and well... just never had any of the little dogs... i like all dogs tho... anyway, one of the things i don't like about little dogs has way more to do with people then dogs at all, and today i got a huge dose of it. why in the world would someone believe that a dog (or any animal for that matter) would want a stranger to jump out and forcibly scoop them up into their arms? i work in a bank, and we allow (some of us insist actually) customers to bring their dogs in for doggy cookies... today a customer brought her little guy in, as she often does and set him up on the counter for his usual he really loves us, and happily trotted toward my co-worker for his cookie (so many of our customers tell us that their dogs get excited about being there when they pull into the parking lot... ) anyway, right after being set on the counter, another customer suddenly jumps over and has to physically stretch to reach across the counter and the dog's mom, so that she can grab this poor little dog, who is obviously terrified of her and struggling to get away meanwhile she is shouting "OH YOU ARE JUST SO CUTE, YOU ARE GONNA FALL, DON'T WORRY I GOT YOU, YOU ARE SO CUTE" and everyone else is saying something along the lines of "whooaaa, you are scaring the crap out of that dog, let him alone!" and she was so fast about it too, no one had a chance to even react before she was grabbing at him...after grabbing him, she immediately shoves her face in his, and he is desperately trying everything he can to tell her he doesn't like what she is doing, and she is completely oblivious... saying things like "i have dogs at home" and i believe something like "dogs just love me!" it reminded me of elmyra from animaniacs... the poor dog was sooo incredibly restrained also, i mean this was traumatic to watch, let alone what he must have experienced, i am actually shocked that he didn't take a chunk out of her face. and of course i am at work so i can't really tell her off as i want to, all i can do is point out how afraid of her he is, finally she puts him on the floor, but do you think she could leave him alone now? heck no, she has to hover over him and baby talk at him, while his mom is trying, as politely as she can (way more politely then i would too btw, i may even have thrown a punch or two in a situation like that..) to extract her poor dog from this woman... and the dog is literally shaking at this point with his tail tucked... not once did this crazy lady even acknowledge that first THAT ISN'T YOUR DOG! or that she had frightened him... she in fact seemed proud of her behavior... i couldn't believe it....

anyway, i am soo glad sometimes that clover isn't a little dog and *usually* i don't have to worry about this with him, *most* people are cautious when they see him and ask permission before they try to pet him so i at least have a moment to make sure that i have the situation under some sort of control... but gosh, what an insight into what these poor little guys must go thru.....

Ya, there are sometimes when I think its ok for a dog to eat a person but then in that case it would somehow be the dogs fault in the eyes of a court. People are crazy and they just dont get it when they are not wanted.

Elmyra LOL
I want to love you and hug you and squeaze you and....

I feel bad for the little dog. People need to respect a dogs space and be more aware of what their actions may bring about, regardless of what size the dog is.

My dogs would have licked the skin right off her face......that'll teach her !

Yes that is very frustrating and so annoying. I haven't had this problem when Oliver although I have had people that will just walk over and pet him without asking. This doesn't really bother me as Oliver is a friendly dog and loves being around people. I wouldn't tolerate someone just walking over and picking up my dog though. Just because they are a small size doesn't mean that it is "safe" to pick up a strangers dog. That dog could have easily bit her out of fear. I'm glad it didn't for the owners sake. Also I hate when some people see a little dog and they feel they have to treat it as a helpless baby. Little dogs are just like any other dog just smaller in size!

There was one episode of "It's Me or the Dog" in which Victoria made the owner sit on the ground and brushed her with a broom to show her how her chihuahua viewed the world; a big place where everyone is a giant. I can't imagine it would be fun to have a giant bear down on you, suddenly grab you, pin your arms to your side, get up in your face and start blabbering at you in a language you can't understand. I'm an introvert that enjoys my personal bubble (ie: spread your arms out and spin; that is your bubble; respect everyone's bubble) so to me this sounds like hell.

Haha! That sounds really traumatic for the poor dog!

People does this to Emmy all the time...(at least at first)...they don't realize that her "job" is to kill !! So I had to "train" her for that. I always have Chico around tho and he becomes really scary if someone does this to her...and I tell them that if they do that I won't be able to hold him if he attacks so they leave her alone!

I have seen her kill foxes many times in the farm and I can tell you she can really hurt someone!

Oh my!!! I'm so lucky then because people normally ask me if it's ok to play or pet my Yorkies before they actually do so.

VERY true-because they would have provoked the attack but it means nothing..

Both Tippy and Critter have been swooped up by people.

Yesterday I had to body block two children that went for Chili in a full on run.

you learn to be vigilant, and firm. "put her down shes not yours" or "she doesn't like that." Tippy is scared when people pick her up and people just go on and on about what a love bug she is.

they also reach and out and pet at random. Alot.
