Question puppy dilemma!!

ok so you know we're getting a puppy soon, and you've seen the pics of her?? well, we might change our minds :O

there is another puppy in the same litter that we like. he's also a boy, which would make life easier for us because monty is unneutered!!

so here's pics of the girl again

(she's on the left in this one)

and this is the boy that we also like-

so, i want to know. what's your vote?? XD

They are both precious. I do think in your circumstance it will be a ton easier for you to get the male. If Monty isn't neutered it is going to be a big hassle when the female is in heat. If you did end up getting the female would you plan on getting her spayed later or are you going to be showing her? Anyways, I tend to be partial to male pets anyways. They seem to have better personalities in my experience. My vote is for the male although the female is super cute.

Both.
I know what doesnt help but you have to look at it both ways and narrow down the reasons for "yes, this one because..." and "no, not that one because..." That should help you decided a little better. Do you know the temperaments of them yet???

So, my vote is for both, like I said.

Yes to the girl because...
-Her coloring and markings are absolutely beautiful!
-You don't have a female yet so it gives you a chance to have both sex's
-She will probably be a tad bit smaller cause shes a girl (?)
-All her things can be cute and pink like her collar and leash (at least that's what id do lol)
-Your dogs could be girlfriend and boyfriend which would look so adorable together!!
-She would match your male
-Give you a chance to come up with a cutie girl name since you already have a boy named
-You'd have a chance to have one of each sex, a boy and girl (which in my opinion would be fun!)

No to the girl because...
-She looks alike like your male
-Your male is not fixed, therefore it could cause a problem (unless you fixed her,him or both of them)
-You would have to buy different colored things to match a girl, since you have a boy and boy colors (if your gender color coordinated like me)
-You might end up with a accidental litter
-You would have to deal with her something into heat which in some cases call for doggy diapers
-Spaying is more expensive than neutering

Yes to the boy because...
-His colors are stunning
-You could tell them apart easier since they don't look alike
-Its cheaper to neuter than to spay
-You have no chance of any "oops" litters being born
-You can call them "Your boy's!"
-Your dog would have a brother to get along with
-They could bond better together
-He wouldn't go into heat so you wouldn't have to deal with what comes along with that
-You can use the boy name you liked but didn't get to use when you where naming your other dog, to name this new puppy

No to the boy because...
-You already have a boy
-They might not get along as well as your dog with a female would
-One or the other might try to dominate the other
-You wouldn't have the chance to experience a girl doggy
-His coloring isn't as pretty as the girl (im my opinion)
-You might have to deal with him marking since he is a male
-You have a boy and a girl would be something a bit different
-They two males together could be a bit overpowering
-There is a chance that if they don't get along by them trying to be dominant or trying to fight, you would have to get both fixed with if you had a girl, you would only have to get just one of them fixed.

So, my thought on this would be to narrow it down like I did Good luck!

Male & Female combo get along the best from what I understand. Only concern would be unneutered merle male being near her - that would be a bad breeding of merle to merle.

My choice would first be opposite sex from what you have already tempered with which pup showed me the most interest in human interaction with a medium calm temperment.

thanks for your votes guys!!!

the one thing maybe i didn't specify was - monty and these puppies are actually fully related. they share the same parents, so an accidental litter from monty and the girl would be disastrous

myvalentine-thanks very much for that very long, very helpful post!! i like your reasoning. 'you can call them "your boys"' that's actually EXACTLY why i wanted another male to begin with!! i could walk them and be like 'come on, boys!' lol

i understand that, in most cases male/female matches are the best. however, we have looked at all the pros and cons of getting both, and decided it would be better for monty, to go for the male

if you met monty you might understand. he is the dopiest, soppiest thing ever, he has been attacked quite badly plenty of times, but has never retaliated. also, the worst two attacks were from border collies (don't think some people quite understand what owning a border collie requires!!!) one of them bit through his lip, but he still ADORES holly, my grandparents BC, and he still tries to go straight back up to a dog to say hello again after he's just been attacked by it!!!

also, the breeder has told us that bear is a little sweetie, and although he's very big in appearance, he's an absolute wimp really!!! (if he's timid, monty will sort that out with his boldness!! he has an irish setter friend who was way too timid to play beforehand, but with monty he plays all the time now, and he doesn't stay really close to his owner anymore!!) sounds like the perfect dog to me!! lol

so we've told the breeder. and to me, this feels right now. i always liked bear, but my family needed convincing. it was the same with monty. my family chose his brother to begin with, whereas i ALWAYS wanted him. at the last minute we went t visit them, saw that actually monty had a nicer temperament, and changed our minds (though like i said i had already decided that i liked him better!!)

i think it would just be a whole lot easier if people would listen to me more often!!! lol

I'm glad to hear you have chosen the male. Also Bear is such a cute name! I'm not sure if you will be keeping it the same but I really like it.

Many people have multiple male dogs that get along perfect. It's hard to say for sure but I wouldn't be too worried about it. How old are the puppies right now? They are such cute balls of fluff!

the pups are 7 weeks since yesterday!! hopefully, we will have the name 'bear' as a sort of second name for him. eg. if we call him louis (loo-ee) which we might do, then he'd be louis bear!!!

even if we dont keep the name bear you can be assured it will stick as a nickname though! what with his big paws and head, thick fluffy fur and little bob tail!!! lol

I like female dogs better so thats what I would have done because the not wanting pups is an easy fix. (just wanted to throw it in, hehe)

Anyway he is a cute pup and glad you chose what is going to work for you
Great breed by the way, herding breeds and sight breeds are the best I think, LOL..

It's funny how nicknames work. When I got Oliver I decided his nickname would be Ollie. Then it turned to Ollie-Bear, and now I catch myself calling him all-a-bear cause it flows off the tongue better than ollie bear. haha I feel so silly when I'm out in public and yelling his name. Anyways the name Louis is cute

I'm pretty sure she is going to be showing her dogs, and the only easy fix would be to get her spayed. That wouldn't be an option for a show dog though.
