My New dog...

I just got a dog yesterday from some people that couldn't take care of her any longer. She is a Beagle/Jack Russel Terrier mix and her name is Joy. She is spayed. I think she is almost two years old. So she is almost an adult. She is a little over weight. She is very sweet. She seems not to be adjusted yet (very understandable) to the house and the people. she whimpers and shivers sometimes. I think she misses her owners. She is not quite used to all the noise. ( Her owners most of the time were not home) but because I am homeschooled with three other siblings there is always someone home. She is very calm inside and walks slow and sleeps most of the time (Hopefully when she is adjusted to everything, that will change) but when I take her on walks, she is out and about and very active. Her teeth aren't in great shape. she came with a bed and bowls, a collar and leash, and some food from Winn Dixie. (they said it was the only food she would eat.) The first ingredient was ground corn and corn isn't very good for dogs. atleast not a lot of it. Very soon I will try some Blue Buffalo food and gradually mix it in and she will hopefully like it and learn to eat it. Its very healthy. I will also get her toothpaste and a toothbrush and brush her teeth daily to get them back in shape. I will get her some toys as she has none. I will also get her some Dental Treats. Her nails are long and I know someone who can do that for me very soon.
How long does it take for a dog to adjust to a new home and new owners?

Welcome and congrats on yuur adoption it can take some time. Allowing her to get away and relax when she needs to is good for her. One thing you can do is put a lot of toys down on the floor and even sit on the floor while studying or just during off time and see if she will come out to play. Tossing treats gently to her everytime she makes a positive move towards coming out, going potty outside, playing etc will help as well.

Btw good catch on the food change, my dogs had a hard time with blue (not every dog does) so if she does have a hard time with it I suggest checking out taste of the wild.

As for the teeth she may need a dental to get the tartar off so you can keep them clean with brushing.

Thank you for the information. That will help. I went to Petsmart and only had enough time to get the toothpaste and toothbrush (soon we will get the toys etc.) and we brushed Joy's teeth and She was pretty good about it but her teeth started to bleed which is a stage of periodontal disease. It could be that she just didn't have her teeth brushed for a long while. I took it gentle on her because it was her first time. The package said to take it easy on her and just brush a few teeth. The back teeth were the worst so I brushed those. If she does have periodontal disease, do you or any one else know a way to cure that?

It will take a few weeks to completely settle in. If she has PD she'll likely need to have her teeth cleaned while shes knocked out at the vet

There is a product called petzlife oral care gel ( petco has it ) that is better because there are a lot of germs under the gums that can make them sick. It has grapefruit seed in it that helps with the immune system if there is infection under the gums. It also helps remove the plaque and tarter.

Grapefruit seed extract is being used successfully in humans and animals alike to eliminate many types of internal and external infections caused from many types of parasites (single and multi-celled), viruses, bacteria's, funguses and more! It naturally detoxifies, enhances and supports the immune system.

I will look into the petz life oral care. thank you.
I would like to take Joy to the vet to get her teeth cleaned, That is the best way and the easiest but that is also the most priciest. I've heard it starts from around 200$! If Joy has Periodontal disease, it is still at one of the beginning stages. I've heard that once they get it it won't get any better but you can prevent it from getting worse by brushing her teeth every day. because she hasn't had her teeth brushed at all before I got her, I will brush them every other day to keep it easy on them and then gradually brush them more. Thank you though.

Dawnben, I will have to try that!

MyDogJoy, something else to try would be DentaFresh. It is a green liquid that can be added to your dogs water. It helps control tartar and also freshens breath.
And congrats on JOY!!!!!

I finally went to Petsmart got Joy some toys. She is still very curious about them and I think she is more of a calm dog than a active and playful dog. She still can be active, especially outside.
The owner called and told me she was mistaken about her age. She's not really almost two. She is almost Five and she had a litter before she was spayed. This also may be why she is a little less active.
I got her some treats by Old Mother Hubbard. It's new at Petsmart. I got her Nature's Recipe for Terrier. She likes it a lot but not too much, has had no problems. I am planning on going to My vet and getting C.E.T.chews that are Dental which gets rid of tartar and plaque. Here is the URL:CET Chews for Medium Dogs (30 Chews)
if you haven't heard of it.

I think she still needs to have a vet check her mouth and gums just to make sure no teeth need to come out
