My in-laws are dog-sitting... nervous!!

Hi everyone,

We are going on vacation for 1 week and rather than leaving our 7 month old puppy in a boarding kennel, my in-laws offered to dog-sit. That was very nice of them, and definitely will save us some money, and Max certainly loves them... I'm just a little nervous since we are still training him, I am worried that they will un-train him. For example, they feed him food under the table when we're not looking (but I always catch them!) eventhough we have told them not to... and they let him chew on weird things like brushes and old slippers, eventhough I asked them not to do that....

Would it be too weird if I left them a list of instructions?? What to do and what not to do? I don't want to seem ungrateful, but I also don't want him to return to us completely un-trained and we will lose any progress that we have made with him so far. I'm open to any feedback and suggestions. :ponder:

i don't think it is weird, i always leave an instruction list for people who watch my pets... makes me feel better... i would hope that they would be willing to follow your instructions also... tho, it is doubtful that he would end up completely untrained, it could slow up your progress in some areas. maybe you could sit down and chat with them about the dog and what is or isn't ok with you as far as he is concerned then go from there... hopefully they'll respect your wishes....

Thanks for your feedback Fawkese1.

I would also hope that they will respect our wishes, although they don't seem to do it while we are there in person, which is a main reason that makes me a bit nervous, imagine what they will feed him when we're not around! Their excuse is... but look, he likes it! That's when I say, yes he also likes to eat geese poop but that doesn't mean that it's good for him! LOL

We are going to have a sit down chat and review the instruction list that I've created :) Hope all goes well. I'm gonna miss my little guy :( but I couldn't pass up a trip to Cuba!

totally understand! i wouldn't pass it up either... good luck with your talk... :)

oh, you may want to include a list of foods that most people don't think are toxic to dogs, but that can prove quite dangerous, that way they understand how important this can be, here are some to get you started:

chocolate
raisins and grapes
avocado
onions
garlic

except for the chocolate, i never knew how dangerous the rest could be until i really started looking into it...

have fun in cuba :)

Ahahahh ;) I know exactly how you feel ;) My inlaws often look after my bunnies for me and I leave them a huge booklet of info (if they don't eat a raisin, call this vet, if it's after 6 pm or a wednesday or weekend, call this vet, if this then this) lol ;) I leave it, and thank them and bring back a gift for them. And I look after their pets for them when they are away or out for the evening or what have you. It's GREAT to have family who will look after your pets and I wouldn't worry too much (easier said then done) ;) Bet your pup will love staying with grandma and grandpa!

I LOVE cuba-been twice-in fact the last time the in-laws looked after the buns we went to Cuba. Been to Veradero and Holguin-where are you going? You'll love it :) No lettuce at the salad bars though ;) hehe

[If I can give you a tip for your trip? Go to the dollar store and buy makeup/beauty products and kids stuff-toys and baby clothes. In general people in Cuba don't go without much despite popular belief but toys for kids and beauty products are scarce! Leave a few items in your room each day for the maid -make sure you leave a little note with it or they won't take it-and they'll just be ecstatic-it's better then money to get something you can't get easily. And the Cuban people are wonderful-it feels great to be able to help :)
Note should read something like 'para usted mi amigo ' -for you my friend' ]
