Kill Shelter.

Well I went to see the dogs I listed on the "Ugly Dogs" thread under photos, and they all seemed...well Ill just put it this way. They were happy, not like shelter dogs. It reminded me of a deer that was raised around humans and planted to get killed by people that payed to shoot a deer. So, I went to a kill shelter!

I wanted to cry. All the dogs looked sad, or they were trying to hold back from crying and tried to smile. When I walked by, a white american bulldog grabbed my arm with his paws through the wire and licked me. To bad he was to big to take home...
I left in tears.
I did see quite a few dogs I liked, one in which I decided on. Im in a race with another lady though. I dont know if any of these are males or females, so I will just say him.
Well he is a longhaired dachshund mix, and another lady is interestead in him. We are in a race to get there Tuesday to adopt.
I didnt want to get my hopes up, so I have a few "back-up" dogs that were very sweet. One is a terrier mix, white and tan. The other is a mixbreed puppy out of a litter of three. I stuck my fingers through the cage and they attacked me like Pacu.
Well anyway Im going back Tuesday to pick up my new best friend ^^

I know how you feel. Trust me.

We also were in "competion" for a dog. WHen we "won" I was crushed to see the people leave without another dog. Part of me thinks I should have let them have her, and picked som'one else, so there could have been two adoptions

I have back-ups, because I really really liked all the dogs, so I wont really be that sad if I loose. Plus, he has a sibling that I like too
He's a lot yappier though, so I will most likely get one of the terrier mixes. Im not that picky when it comes to dogs, because whatever breed or behavior I can train it.
I just cant wait until Tuesday, but Im also really nervous.

can't wait to see who you pick....

Iam the same way, I figure looks aren't really important and I can train most of the problems away. I usually look for a size that fits

Same here, I really want the american bulldog because she litteraly reached out and grabbed me, like she wanted to get out of there. But I cant take on a really big dog right now with all the health problems by dachshunds have.
My original first choice looked a lot like Mikey only with longer, terrier-like hair. If I adopt him it would be kind of cool ^^
Im sticking to kill-shelters after this. All the dogs in there would make perfect family or companion dogs if given the chance. But I know the truth is half wont make it.

to me it will depend. If we do another Pit bull (or other large dog)I will go back to the no-kill as they have spent months upon months with the dogs. Iam not worried about a newly adopted 5-15lb dog attacking me, but with a larger dog I'd like more background. Especially since I have small dogs and cats. The kill shelter does not test for cats.

other than that I will do the kill shelter, my last two dogs came from the kill shelter and Iam very happy with them

I understand with the pitbulls and everything, especially if you have other dogs.
I think I was four when my mom brought home a pitbull, he almost killed the dachsund we had back then. She picked him strait off the street, which is kind of the same thing with a kill shelter only they give them shots, micro-chip, and all the good stuff.

thats why I shy away from picking up larger breed stray dogs. As much as i want to help, i have to think about my safety. I tried to pick up a boxer mix several times over the course of a few weeks (couldn't catch him) and then later watched him attack another stray dog in the neighborhood...I spend $300 patching up the strays leg at the e-vet...then a month later the same boxer mix attacked ANOTHER stray dog and I spend $400 fixing his leg.

man Iam a sucker. Both strays are in homes now. The boxer mix vanished.

but anyway, I stick to picking up mostly the little guys.

I would do the same, mostly because I believe in karma and if my dog got into that situation I would want another owner to do the same if I couldnt get there in time.
You did the right thing

If we can't get people to understand breeding- ie dont make mix breeds, and breeding is only to better the breed they are in- it will continue. .... sad but true.
Breeding should only be done to better a breed or continue what they have and so many have no clue of this at allllll!
