How dogs understand "love"?

I was just wondering how a dog realizes our love??

When we hug, kiss or generally pet our dogs do they understand we love them?...or it is just the playing and training time?

I really like laying on the floor with my dogs and hug them kiss them etc ...do they understand anything of this as "I love you"?

I think so

Alfi did you get a chance to see this YouTube - Horizon: The Secret Life of the Dog Part 1/6 it's in 6 parts but basically one of the things it really points to is how much dogs understand us.

I think dogs understand our tone and face and know we love them There's nothing like telling a dog 'good boy/girl' they definitely know what we are saying I'm sure they know we love them

Interesting....I don't really know how to answer that! I guess the romantic notion would be yes they do LOL Impossible to know really. Alot of dogs don't like being hugged /restrained etc, but many do seem to seek it out.

I think that dogs understand love, however hugging/kissing etc aren't something that they are programmed to understand. Currently reading Patricia McConnell's For the Love of a Dog which basically talks about emotions in dogs.. I just started it but so far it's quite interesting, you might like it!

I didn't had much time to see the vids Mikey due to Forest ...but I will

Oh yeah Ebony didn't like hugs! She would only come to pet her when she wanted...she would love tho to play "catch" all the time

When I find some time I'll try to get that book Cali

Thank you all!

It is just that sometimes I catch my dogs looking at my eyes and I do the same and I just wonder "what are you thinking now?" Especially these last days with Forest when he stares at me it is like "please please give me a hug!!" or other times "Hey look I did it right...I am happy" wagging his tail...but I know all these are in my mind.

Oh they better understand how much I love them cause if not I'll catch them...
