How Big a Dog Can Hawks Pick UP??

I was outside with Marty today , he weight about 20 lbs and it a mini poodle mix. I forget to look up and see if any hawks where flying around and before I knew it there was a huge hawk flying toward us! The hawk may had realize Marty was too big or saw I was with him and the hawk flew off! Poor Marty never got to take a pee as I put in my car to bring him to the groomer. There are sometime 3 or 5 hawks circling around my back yard as there a huge field behind my condo and we have rabbits and wild turkeys back there plus ton of mice! Can a hawk pick up a dog as heavy as Marty? I have seen a hawk fly off with a squirrel, and it was still alive! Marty did get to do his business when he got to the groomer. I am really worry about Marty when there is more than one hawk flying around, I like to let him play in the back yard, I do have a long leash on him at the time. Has anyone had any problem with small dogs and hawks ?

We haven't had a problem but my dad worries about his small dog (17lbs) and often puts her inside if he sees hawks circling (or landing on our fence... !) She is also typically tethered outside if he's doing yard work...

The average hawk you'll find in the US (red-tail, white tail, Cooper's, ferruginous) can manage about 6-10 lbs of prey. Of course, they can seriously injure a larger animal, including humans, with their razor sharp talons.

Golden eagles, which are rare, can attack and carry off up 30lbs or slightly more of prey animal.

I am really nervous about letting Marty play in the yard anymore, the last time he was out playing I saw a few hawks circling around about us! A hawk once came very close to trying to made a dive, it follow us over head to my building! I picked up Marty and ran to the house! I would be careful about having your tethered outside . I heard on the news about a person walking their small dog on a leash and a hawk tried to fly off with the dog! the owner was able to pull the dog away from the hawk! Poor dog!!

I do not know what kind of hawk this was but it was huge! Are red tail hawk smaller than other hawks?

Thank you guys for answering!

My neighbor's chihuahua was killed by a hawk. He probably weighed 5 or 6 lbs. Eagles will pick up goats, btw, there's a very disturbing video on YouTube to prove it.

If you have hawks actively hunting in your area, I wouldn't let your dog play outside unattended, just in case.

An adult Redtail is about the size most people seem to assume hawks to be, but not huge (though if you've no comparison...). Eagles however can carry off quite a bit (we have Bald Eagles by us, very cool!!). You also have to realize that the birds can KILL animals larger than they can carry, so if the bird miss-judges the size of the animal they can still do quite a bit of damage if they decide to go after your small animal.

I guess you missed my comment about a woman walking her small dog on a leash and a hawk attacked the dog! The woman was able to pull her dog away from the hawk . Birds can be very bold around people when they're hungry. My granddaughter had a seagull fly down and take food right out her hand! She was very lucky to not had gotten hurt.

I never let my dogs outside by themselves no matter how big or small they're.
We have a coyote around here too! That is horrible about your neighbor's chihuahua! One of my neighbor's chihuahua got out house by mistake and the woman did not know it until I told her dog was outside. I waited outside until someone came home as I was worry a hawk would get the dog! The woman left her door open for a second and her chihuahua sneaked out of the house.
I believe you about the eagle picking up a goat! They are really huge birds and have a wing span of 6 feet or more!
