Coming Home

It turns out Neela came home this weekend. We were going to wait a bit longer but circumstances arose that made that get a bit rushed. She is 8 weeks old so it should be ok.

Apparently her mother ran out of milk about a week ago and didn't seem to want to take care of the puppies. She would cover their food and just didn't seem to be interested in them. (bad mother!) The breeder has decided to retire her - she's 5 years old.

We wanted her to stay with her litter mates a bit longer but all of them were picked up by their families Saturday...so we went and got Neela too. If she was going to be sitting around in a kennel without her litter mates she may as well be doing it with us so we can begin training her.

She is a sweet little thing. She seems confident but pretty passive - she didn't seem scared to look around but would always 'stop' when asked to. We took her to a dog park on Sunday and all the dogs seemed to like her (and her butt) and she seemed to get along with them very well. There wasn't much in the way of playing (she didn't understand the concept of chasing the ball or anything) but she was content to lick the other dogs and follow them around when they weren't running.

Saturday night was pretty restless but Sunday night wasn't too bad. I think she's learning to be crated rather well. We had trouble with her peeing in the house on Saturday. It was our fault because we had no idea when she might need to go...it turns out the answer is "all the time".

We've figured out a good strategy for her pee schedule - basically take her out the moment she wakes up from a nap or has spent a long time doing anything (playing, wandering, eating, etc). I don't even think she knows she has to go until she is already going. We've been lucky enough to avoid dookie accidents. *whew*

She has her first vet appointment in a few hours but my wife is handling that since I'm at work and it's her day off. Hopefully everything goes well.

Here are some pictures from this last weekend.

My wife holding her new puppy for the first time. They seemed to get along well. pic

I'm holding her now...she seemed pretty tired. pic

Just wandering around. pic

Still scratching at the new collar. pic

Falling over from scratching at the new collar. haha...I love this one. pic

OMG she is soooo cute!!! She is beautiful!! I can't wait for more pics!!

I would say get the shots done first and then take her to meet other dogs or let her only with dogs you know are vaccinated just to be sure!

I agree I would refrain from taking her out into any public areas where other dogs go because of diseases. Dogs should never go to pet stores or parks or even through neighborhoods until fully vaccinated

She is pretty

8 weeks should be fine, that's the general recommended age to take pups home in the UK at least. Guide dogs tend to go even earlier at about 6wks into their puppy walking foster homes so i'm sure your pup will be fine.

Usually they recommend you carrying them places instead until vaccinated so they still get the socialisation benefits but not to put them on the ground or to meet unknown/unvaccinated dogs. Maybe that's also different in the states.
