Question Can a Great Dane run a 5K?

Hello, everyone. I have an almost-5-year-old Great Dane (Nisa) who is active and healthy (somewhat smaller at only 108 lbs). Our local humane society is hosting a doggie 5K (where the owners can run with the dogs), and I would like to participate with Nisa. My question is, would this be ok for her to do or would it be too stressful to run/jog such a long distance (roughly 3 miles)? Thank you for your help!

I don't know anything about great danes.

We walked in our shelter's 5k with all four of my small dogs. We even made it to the finish!

The bigger the dog, the harder exercise is on their joints and heart. My suggestion would be to start gently conditioning her body to exercise and then see how well she takes that. Then, you can ascertain how she'll react to jogging a 5K.

Walking a 5k would be no problem. Jogging? I'm not sure. As Cardigirl mentioned, larger dogs tend to have more problems with more intense exercise due to the extra stress on their joints and such. GreatDaneMom would probably be the best one to answer this since she seems to be the Dane expert here. You can also check with your vet as long as you have a knowledgeable one (there's a lot that use old information, so be careful). They may even be able to suggest a conditioning regimen to get your pup ready with the lowest amount of risk.

Three miles should be just fine for an active, healthy Dane. I bike about that distance with my two Danes on a regular basis.

As Cardigirl mentioned though you need to slowly work up and condition her to that distance. It wouldn't be wise to just throw her out there and expect her to run that whole distance with no prior conditioning. Make sure to keep a look out for signs of fatigue, etc.

i would take this question to your vet, and have a complete physical done on your dog before you start conditioning, find out if your particular dog has any health issues that would make it a bad idea to try with her... IMO a steady and easy jog, for a dog that has been built up to it won't necessarily harm the dog, BUT that depends on many different factors (conditions like elevation and temperature etc) especially when you have a giant breed involved, best to play something like this with a "better safe than sorry" approach....

Unless you build up gradually and are careful I would say no.
