Can anyone offer advice? Considering going travelling

hi there everyone!

i have a sort of situation!

my partner and i have a pom and a pom cross. we are seriously thinking about going travelling for up to 10 months next year but obviously need to consider our doggies in this situation!

we have a aked a few friends and family members who are considering looking after them for us but are a little unsure!

we obviously do not want to give them up completley as we adore them and it would certainly not be fair to put them into kennels or anythin nor can we afford to do it this way of course!

i was just wondering if anyone could offer any information or advice? i dunno is there a fostering service out there for this sort of thing or something? any advice or information you could give us would be fab i mean obviously we would leave money for food etc but can't afford pet sitting etc because of the length of time going for?

thank you

Even if you are going to another country you can take them with you. You'd need to talk to the vet about health issues before you go (often a health certificate is required, as well parasite control may be different then at home). I have a friend at work who brings her five dalmations with her twice a year back to the philipines. Theres no reason you can't bring them-you'll just have to plan plan plan!

Take them with you. Our doggies travel a lot. Small dogs are pretty easy to travel with too.

as much as i'd love to we can't really take them with us because of the amount of time (10 months) we are going for and we are going backpacking and staying in hostels and moving through about 5/6 different countries while we go! x

Yes, that does make it awkward.

Well, we have seen folks from my school go on year long sabbaticals and leave their dogs with friends for the year. It has actually worked out great. The new family gets to have a dog(s) for a while, without committing to a lifetime of ownership. Often children have been involved and have loved the opportunity to learn about having a dog. The dogs have actually done fine adapting to a new home, then transitioned back to their original families just fine. So I think if you find the right situation, the dogs will do well, and you'll know they are safe and well cared for.

Part of the deal usually involves the original owner financing food and veterinary care for the year. Sometimes there has been a return favor of animal sitting also.

That is tough...I personally wouldn't plan a trip like that bc I have dogs as well as many other pets. My vacations revolve around finding them somewhere to stay first.

If you have a family member or friend who the dogs know and are comfy with I would take that route. However, do not just suddenly go missing for 10 months. Have then take the dogs for 1 night, then a weekend, then a week, then a couple weeks, then a month, etc. Work your way up to being gone...
