Until they are brought into a home-they don't know what one is. They aren't born with this-and wolves don't use them. So they cannot possibly come with some idea, some inborn construct that 'I go through a door first to be boss' It's silly.

i personally think that taking two dogs for a walk is a good way to introduce them... so long as they are reasonably well leash trained and not reactive to each other... i also don't let my dog rush out of the door all the time, but he does go thru it before me... i ask him to go thru, then he turns around and waits for me while i close the door behind us... i make him wait tho, not bc i am leader, but bc neither of us know who or what may be outside when the door is opened and the front of my house has no fence... it is for safety reasons... and i suppose i use waiting at the door (the open door) as an exercise in impulse control...

I will walk 2 dogs at a time, but never more than that! Even with 2 couplers, one on the right and one on the left, they tend to get tangled. If my husband walks with me i the evening then we often take all 4.

I don't make my dogs walk beside or behind me all of the time. As long as they walk on a loose leash I'm fine with it. I do however practice (only with Penny and Roxy as I take rally classes) a heel and calling them to heel at different points on a walk.

I do not Penny out the door way before me. She also has to "sit" and "wait" before I let her out. It really has nothing to do with pack mentality. It's more about teaching her a boundry as she has bolted in the past!

I agree with that-it's too crazy to put a dog into the yard or home of another-so we always do a little walk first Works great

Ditto that-and it's good thing to do-having the dog pile out the door like a tornado isn't so cool-but I agree it's not a pack thing
Mikey sits and waits at the door, then promptly sits outside of the door (so we can lock it) sits at the car for the door to be opened. Sits in the car waiting for it to be opened and the release 'ok' to come out of the car. And he sits and is quiet before we unleash him at the park.
In fact if we let him leave the house with no leash on, he still sits on the porch and waits and then again at the car. But it's not because I'm alfa-its just training
