New male dog some advice and info please!

First of all I'd just like to say BIG HELLO to everyone as i'm brand new to the forum!

I'm actually looking for some info and advice really!

bit of background......we did have two poms though sadly one of them (Savannah) passed away in december but we still have Daisy....she is nearly 5 years old but very active and has bags of energy though after we lost savannah we could tell that she missed the company so after much debate over adopting an older dog or getting a puppy we decided to start looking for a dog that needed a new home! we found bruno, he was the second dog we went to see and we fell in love with him! we decided to go for a male as we heard that this was best when introducing a new dog!

he is 2 years old but has not yet been neutered (daisy has been spayed).
the two met a couple of days ago when we went to meet bruno and they got on ok (daisy showing him who is boss) and we picked him up tonight.
since getting home they have been playing lots but because he hasn't been neutered he has been trying to mount daisy. we are planning to get him neutered as soon as we can get him in at the vets.

I guess what i'd like to know is - will this mounting stop once he's been neutered or is it something that will have to be trained out of him?
if so how do we do this?

thank you for any advice and info you can give me

ps: they have both warn each other now as are both asleep he he he!

Hi and welcome!

if the humping has already become a habit, the neuter may not have the desired effect, its likely som'thing you will have to "train out" of him. You can interupt him and redirect him to som'thing more apropriate. If he continues, feel free to remove him from the room for thirty seconds or so, and then try again.

Talking

THank you!

so far we have been saying his name loudly and clapping is this ok?

he is booked in for his op tomoz!

i want to stop this behaviour as daisy is starting to get fed up of fending him off but i also dont want him to not play with her (which they have done a few times) because he thinks we are stoping him doing this! i think sometimes they start off playing but he cant help himself!

It may be better for Daisy to simple tell him enough. I know thats what my female does whenever males hump her..

Saying his name and making a loud noise that scares him is only going to associate his name with something negative. I think putting him another room when he does it and leaving him there for 30 seconds to a minute each time he does it will eventually lead him to seeing that when he does that behavior, he gets removed from her presence

Humping is a normal behavior-expressing play and excitement-however its not cocktail party behavior.

I'd say, like Crio said, reidrect. If he's humping-show him a sexy pillow instead of a leg. Redirect to something appropriate. Your not going to be able to end the behavior most likely without strict careful training-it's a natural beahvior-like teaching Homer Simpson not to drink beer! But instead teach your dog where it is ok and where it isn't. So if he's humping a leg-call him, show him the humpee-the pillow or what have you and reward like crazy for humping that!!! It's much much better to teach an acceptable outlet for normal behavior then to try to quash normal behavior
