My new Puppy Wesly question.

Hi, i'm a proud owner of a new Westie puppy that i brought home 2 days ago.
He is 8 weeks old and healthy.
Since i'm a new pup owner i do have questions that i hope it can get answers since i do want him to succeed.

1) My puppy cries/whine a lot in this x-pen when he's not sleeping. I usually take him outside first and then play with him. Even at night
his he testing me? should i let him whine?

2) he hates the crate. he whines when he's in there
once again should i let him out or just let him whine?

3) he doesnt like his kong. i stuff treats in there for him to eat, after he knock around it a bit, he gives up and doesnt try.

4) he bites a lot, so when he bites me, i make a loud "yip" voice for him to stop but when i try to give him the toy for him to chew on, he doesnt want it.

5) i'm trying to train him his name but he doesnt sit still, always trying to look for something to bite.
I try putting the treat to his noise to get his attention and call his name while i pull the treat towards my face. am i doing this right?

thank you so much for taking time to answering all these question

The dog is super super young, he needs to be introduced slowly to the x-pen as well as his crate. I always suggest putting toys and a bed in there and also feed him in it. Also he is whining b/c he wants and actually needs the attention Can he be out of his x-pen and crate except for feeding and very short periods of time? There are stickies in the forum about different ideas for getting a pup used to their crate, but they all do mention it needs to be done slowly and positively. When you start whatever method I say dont let him out until he stops wining, but you should also start with you present, not gone.

He may just not be that into kongs, maybe try some peanut butter in it and see if that changes anything

If he is not redirecting to a toy and continues to bite walk away completely.

Thats ok, he can still learn him name

The way I learned it was say his name, nothing else, do what you need to do that does not involve you saying other words to get his attention. For example...he is lying down, you say his name, no response from him, blow on his head gently, he looks at you..."yes!" or click (depending on if you use a clicker or not) then treat. It may take time but if you say his name and nothing else then when he makes eye contact you treat him he will get it

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new pup!

good advice from pawz

may i ask what you mean by "the toy" that you are re-directing him to? it may just be that he doesn't like that particular type of toy... i always recommend that you have a variety of toys made out of different stuff... and lots of them...

also, with the kong, peanut butter is a great thing to stuff it with, you may want to check out this thread.

for the crate/x-pen thing... ditto pawz again, you have to go slowly... i would put the crate in the x-pen, and put his bed in the crate, leave the door open... feed him in the crate, in the x-pen, put his goodies in there, etc... and practice with him in there for short periods of time... as pawz said, he should really only need to be in there when you aren't able to supervise him... you may want to check out this thread on crate training.
