where I live, the predominant culture feels that dogs should run loose. And every culture seems to think that dog should live only outside. The result is lots of loose, unsocialized dogs and lots of understimulated dogs behind fences barking and freaking out. Every single house almost without exception has at least one dog...many have up to 5.

I imagine the human equvilant would be a woman walking down a cell block. I don't feel my dogs enjoy it.

Ok I get it now!

Yeah that's a good point. Although this doesn't happen everywhere. Where I live you wont see a dog (who has owner) running loose except in a dogpark...at least this not common. I think my dogs enjoy the walk in town...although I mostly walk them in the woods.

I have to say I'm pro-puppy walking. I usually walk Charlie halfway down my street once a day which is 1/4 of a mile and then run him around the backyard. I like doing this because he meets lots of new people, I can teach him how to behave around cars before he gets too strong and I also want to run off some of his energy. He's also slightly nervous so I want to get him used to as many new situations as possible so he gains confidence. It's worked in the week I've been doing it. He looks forward to his walks and is learning how to walk properly although he still cries if we go somewhere new. I'm also teaching him to sit when a car comes by and to not dash into the street. The last thing I want is for Charlie to grow into a nervous dog that is 80lbs and yanks me into the street (this has happened to me before which is why I want to teach him while he's only 20lbs).

I do live in a quiet area that has a good dog population but not an excessive one so I don't have to worry about Charlie meeting sick dogs on a walk (you never know but he has most of his shots) or having to dodge multiple strays, which sounds scary and annoying by the way and not to mention dangerous.
