I want my dog back

I have a chinese crested, who is staying with my mom at the moment. We were going to get evicted if we kept her, because the neighbors were complaining about her crying. I was a kid when i got her, and i babied her, which is my problem. she is now 7 yrs old and we have never addressed this because i have never had a problem before. When i leave, she cries. she howls, she yelps, she barks, she makes tons and tons of noise. How can I break her of this so I can have her back with me?

do you leave anything interactive for her to do in your absence?

Definitely separation anxiety.

You can:

Practice leaving your dog alone for short periods of time. Pick up your keys and leave for 1 minute.

Gradually increase the amount of time you stay away. This will accustom your dog to your absence.

Avoid overly emotional good-byes and greetings. Instead, pat your dog on the head and offer a quick good-bye or hello.

I wouldn't necessarily say out right separation anxiety, because there might be other factors involved. I agree, you leaving her causes her to do this, but as Crio asked, is there anything for her to do while you are gone to keep her occupied instead of pining away for you? is she destructive while you are gone? crated?

If you feel you can't handle this on your own, why not get professional help from a behaviorist to help you change her behavior to a more pleasant one while you are gone? I admit I might feel at my wit's end if I was in your situation.

Good luck with everything!

Oh! and welcome to dog forum!
