Hi, I have a 14-year-old yellow labrador who is in pretty good health considering her advanced age. However, we recently lost her companion, a bichon frise, to a tragic car accident. Ever since then, our labrador has become a nuisance barker (neighbors are complaining) and she has been pooping inside the house, in plain view of others. Normally, if she feels like having an accident indoors, she sneaks off into a corner (as she knows this is bad behavior), but now she has been pooping right in front of our eyes! So, we can no longer leave her indoors when we're not at home, or else she'll make a poop/pee mess everywhere, but if we leave her in the backyard, she will bark and annoy the neighbors. Any suggestions? We want to make her final years as peaceful as possible, but she has been acting up. I don't know if it's senile behavior and she's simply forgetting proper behavior, or if she's acting up from the loss of her canine companion. Is it possible to "re-housebreak" an old dog and curb her barking? Would paper-training be feasible? Help!!
...guess that means it's back to square one and lots of supervision. Wish they could stay young forever!
