For me for free shaping I'll click at anything-but I chose ONE thing. Like I won't sit there and click for looking left, sighing, yawning. pawing me etc. I'll pick one thing, and then click for the first 'step'
When we started out-it was simply breaking eye contact, and then worked up to looking left. That's how simple we worked. (Mikey would NOT offer behaviors).
So for a free shaping session (I always do this when people are over, and often focus on a goal of pawing or touching with his nose) and I ask them to pick something in the room that they would like Mikey to touch...then I ask them paw or nose?
Then I get my clicker and treats and sit. And Mikey comes up ready to 'play' -I first click for a look in the general direction (but not ANY other direction-just the one I want)-and I'll click for any glance that way. After six or seven click-treats, I change criteria (successive approximation)
Now he has to GO in that direction. I click treat for any body movement (Step) in that direction.
Then change criteria again (After six or seven click treats-so he knows he's getting 'warmer' and isn't frustrated)-now he has to start touching things in that area-and I will only click for touching the right thing.
He always starts touching with nose (when he's guessing)-I'll click-treat six or seven times and stop...then he's a little frustrated, he'll try touching with other parts of his body, and I'll click treat for pawing.
I can usually get him to touch anything within five or so minutes and it's a fun 'party trick'
(So I hope that shows you how I do it; That you can click-treat ANYTHING-but pick ONE thing for that session )
