no worries... different ways of doing things

lol so far, i've been lucky, clover usually likes my instructions (or seems too) one reason why i click him for some of the stuff he offers that he knows already is that i like him to have the defaults, when you get confused/want attention etc, sit/down and you might get it, AND because some of his default stuff like that calms him, for instance, bowing seems to help him get rid of tension (he is basically stretching) so i like to make sure he keeps doing those things...

sorry pawz... not trying to run away with your thread, hope this stuff helps you too tho!

Also, Iam happy we can answer this...I had to read and read and read (and do) for YEARS to get these answers through bits of info here and there and trial and error. I didn't have a soul to ask.

anyway, thats how you backchain a retrieve...clicks for looks, touches, mouthing, lifting, then more lifting, then targeting your hand with the object, and then adding distance.
ditto this! and, this info is helpful to lurker too!

i always end a session on a good note, there are certain behaviors that clover really enjoys doing, and that get him sorta "pumped" so i'll ask for those if the training was harder/he seemed confused... that way he stays engaged with me, bc the training is fun for him too... that is one reason i want to put the shaking off thing on a cue, (still haven't gotten around to that) if i want him to be excited about something, i'll ask for speaks and bows (both were captured during play) if he is sorta stressed/confused i'll ask for touches, bows and downs, they calm him down...

anyway, hope i didn't go off on a tangent there!

For me for free shaping I'll click at anything-but I chose ONE thing. Like I won't sit there and click for looking left, sighing, yawning. pawing me etc. I'll pick one thing, and then click for the first 'step'

When we started out-it was simply breaking eye contact, and then worked up to looking left. That's how simple we worked. (Mikey would NOT offer behaviors).

So for a free shaping session (I always do this when people are over, and often focus on a goal of pawing or touching with his nose) and I ask them to pick something in the room that they would like Mikey to touch...then I ask them paw or nose?
Then I get my clicker and treats and sit. And Mikey comes up ready to 'play' -I first click for a look in the general direction (but not ANY other direction-just the one I want)-and I'll click for any glance that way. After six or seven click-treats, I change criteria (successive approximation)
Now he has to GO in that direction. I click treat for any body movement (Step) in that direction.
Then change criteria again (After six or seven click treats-so he knows he's getting 'warmer' and isn't frustrated)-now he has to start touching things in that area-and I will only click for touching the right thing.
He always starts touching with nose (when he's guessing)-I'll click-treat six or seven times and stop...then he's a little frustrated, he'll try touching with other parts of his body, and I'll click treat for pawing.

I can usually get him to touch anything within five or so minutes and it's a fun 'party trick'

(So I hope that shows you how I do it; That you can click-treat ANYTHING-but pick ONE thing for that session )

Ok free shaping or not?

Glacier, who btw LOVES the flasher! No but really he does. He always looks at it when he does a behavior then if it flashes he looks at my other hand (this is probably not ideal but to me I love it, if it doesnt flash he tries again or tries something else) was going through training and I decided to not give any cues and see what he would offer, mind you we have not introduced the cup yet, that is tonight. So...he picks up a paw real quick, almost like shifting his weight. I flashed, treated. It took a min but he did it again, I flashed, treated. THEN after 5 quick reps I stopped with one paw and moved for two...HE GOT IT, or so I think LOL unless he was doing it just to do it? I was leaning towards he was free shaping b/c one I didnt ask for this behavior at all and two he started doing it like "ah yes if I pick up my paw I get flashed ( ) and get yummy treats!

Anywho, thoughts?
