I like small freeshaping objects personally...that way the dog has the option to lift it also...great if you plan on ever teaching a retrieve.

Then again, Tippy did retrieve a giant box once. She gets really into it.

So maybe get a plastic cup or something else small and just increase the reward for "better" behaviors? Let's say he sits and I click/treat and he does it again, do I still click/treat or hold out for the next behavior?

I like the plastic cups...the funny one is them sticking their face in it...

Its up to you when you want to raise criteria...if you go "by the book" you want the dog to do it for you 10 out of 10 times (to ensure he knows what hes being clicked for) before you ad more criteria

I never click for sits/downs other known stuff in free shaping sessions...just new stuff...creative stuff.

keep clicking and treating for the sit... just give a better reward when the behavior gets better... so to start out, you click/treat everything, but any interaction with the cup gets a better reward, so he starts to experiment with the cup, he paws at it, click treat noses it, click treat etc... all those get the better rewards at first, but if he happens to sit, you still click and treat... let's say you want him to pick up the cup and bring it to you... eventually you will stop giving the better rewards for the interactions with the cup except for the ones that are close to your goal, so if he opens his mouth and puts it on the cup at all, he gets the better reward...

Ok that makes sense. So even if I want him to stick his face in it but he wants to move it around with his paw then I click 10 times as long as he gets it all 10 then move on and stop clicking. I won't do that yet, maybe after a few more sessions. I'm so sorry I am so dumb about this I feel real silly that I have so many little detailed questions.

Let me set this up...

1st through (fill in the blank) session - click and treat for any random offer but give more or a higher reward if he touches the cup.

Later sessions - shoot for the specific behavior, ie picking up the cup with his mouth and again givbe small rewards for playing with cup and high rewards for picking it up?

When do I switch objects? How often do I switch objects?

Ok I just read fawkese's post lol. Ok now I know how to in a sense push him to do more, by fading out the good treat from the low interaction. Ty!!

oh its not right/wrong...just som'thing I personally don't do....I didn't even think about it until now...lol

the only problem I have found with doing TONS of FS only for a decent amount of time.... is that when you do sit down to teach the dog som'thing structured, he may throw alot of behaviors at you...ignoring your instructions...

*cough* Tippy *cough*

oh god, don't feel bad/dumb...firstly I love answering this stuff. I could talk about this all day.

Also, Iam happy we can answer this...I had to read and read and read (and do) for YEARS to get these answers through bits of info here and there and trial and error. I didn't have a soul to ask.

anyway, thats how you backchain a retrieve...clicks for looks, touches, mouthing, lifting, then more lifting, then targeting your hand with the object, and then adding distance.
