My husband and I have been having problems with our 5 year old rescue beagle almost every time we leave the house. Up until a year ago we always left him in the crate when we left and he always was fine. Then he started peeing in the crate to the point where every time I came home from work I would have to wash the blanket in his cage because he would pee all over it. Due to this, we decided to try something new. We put a gate up to prevent him from going upstairs to the carpeted area in our house, would cover the furniture in case he laid on it, and left him out thinking this would help his behavior by giving him a little more freedom. For a while it worked, he was always fine, but then a few months ago, he started peeing on the floor right beside the gate. He would do this more often than not. About two weeks ago, he somehow managed to bust the gate down and now we have to keep him in the crate again when we leave and he pees in it almost every single time. Sometimes we are only gone for a matter of an hour or two. Today, we came home to find that not only had he peed, but he had chewed the bottom panel of the crate and broke off an entire corner of it.

He is completely housebroken and he NEVER goes in the house we are home. At night, he holds it all night while we sleep until we wake up in the morning to take him out again. He never chews anything except for the bones we give him to chew on. We have no clue what to do with him. My husband is fit to be tied because we have a baby due any day now and he doesn't want the dog constantly peeing in the house with a baby around. It's to the point where we dread leaving because we know we have to come home to a mess to clean. He wants to give him away, but I want to try and find a solution to see if the situation can be helped before we consider that. Is there anyone who knows what is wrong with my dog and what we can do to solve this problem??

Sounds like a separation anxiety issue...

Have there been any changes in the household that might be causing an increase in his stress levels? Is he getting enough exercise? That can help an anxious dog feel better and more relaxed.

You could also do some training for leaving him... do a site search for "separation anxiety" and see if you come up with some useful threads.
