My dog won't stop getting in the trash!

Does anyone have any ideas how to stop a dog from getting in the trash. I am at my wits end!!

These are the things I have tried:

1.The trash cans with the lids didn't help at all. We put the trash in a cabinet he got in it. He has scratched the cabinet door to get it open. We tried putting a chair up against the cabinet, he pushes the chair and gets in the trash.

2. I have tried using vinegar around the trash they say dogs can't stand the smell of vinegar doesn't bother mine. He gets in it.

3. I tried rubbing alcohol - doesn't bother him.

4. Started spraying him with a water bottle when I catch him, doesn't stop him.

Does anyone have any other suggestions. He is a well fed dog and somewhat overweight. Of course all the midnight garbage buffets don't help. You would think he was starving!! He also likes to counter surf. I hate to put the garbage bags on top of the counter and he has even gotten into that at times. So sick of coming home and finding trash from one end of the kitchen to the other. Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed. HELP!

The problem is that getting into the trash is very REWARDING. And the random "punishment" he's getting is not enough to deter him.

Solution: Put the trash in the cupboard or in a dog proof trash can.

Really, that is the easiest solution. Its not really reasonable to expect your dog to resist the temptation to get into something that smells like food when its available to him so easily.

Also, of course, don't leave food on the counters while you are not in the kitchen.

BTW, what breed of dog do you have?
Sounds like a lab or lab mix. Some types of dogs will go to the end of the earth to get food, even when well fed.

Ditto!
Koda was terrible as a pup for getting into it, however I put painters tape 2 feet away from the trash and stood near it for hours at a time. When Koda would touch the tape i'd say "get out of it " or "at" very loudly, he'd back off. Eventually I was able to remove the tape and he understood there was a boundry line.

Thank you for your quick response. We have the trash in the cupboard. That was the first thing I tried. He still figures a way to get at it. I could try a baby lock but he has scratched that cupboard so much this would be even more scratches I am afraid. Even the outside huge trash containers when locked he chews and gets the lid off somehow. Such determination. My dog is a puggle. Being part beagle he has the beagle nose!!! I suppose I could try cayenne pepper I don't know about that it is sooo hot. I keep threatening that he is going to the SPCA LOL!! I think he knows I would never do it! I do love him so.

Perhaps the dog is not reliable enough yet to be left loose in the entire house. What about confining the dog to one room with a baby gate, or perhaps putting baby gates up to keep him out of the kitchen.

Overall, this is not a training problem, its a matter of figuring out how to physically keep the dog and the trash separate.
