You sound very perceptive about your dog, and it's likely you are on the right track about something negative that has happened for your dog in that part of the yard. Trying to counter condition her aversion with the use of positive reinforcement is a good idea!
Let us know what you find out and if anything works. And I hope the hot weather lets up soon!
PS. Yes, I'd make sure that the other dog is not out in the back while your dog is... make that the "rule" for a while and see if, that, along with some pleasant associations, such as scattering kibble for her to find out there, helps her get over it!
