My dog won't pee in back yard, just in the front!!!

I just adopted my very well-trained and potty trained 5 year old shih tzu about 10 weeks ago. Just recently she ONLY wants to go out in the front yard rather than the back to explore, etc. She will go pee in the back yard when she HAS to but I haven't seen her poo in a long time back there. It's typically in the front or when we go on walks.

She hates a leash but is getting better on one (think something traumatic happened on one when she was younger). I have no problem with her going in the front but I don't/can't stay out there all the time with her in the mornings as I'm getting ready for work. I live in Texas too so I start sweating the minute I step outside. I put a leash stake in the front w/ a long leash but she freaks out when she's on it....so that's not a solution. And obviously I can't leave her out there by herself.

I'm going to try to award her with snacks when she goes in the back yard and see how that works (read something about that). Any other suggestions?? Thanks.

My roommate also has a dog that goes in the back - could this be the problem? It's a bigger dog and she just bothers my dog by wanting to play all the time and mine is ONly a people person. Maybe she is viewing the back yard as the place that sometimes has the 'other' dog out there that invades her space. ???

Hello Newdogowner!
Welcome to the forum.
You sound very perceptive about your dog, and it's likely you are on the right track about something negative that has happened for your dog in that part of the yard. Trying to counter condition her aversion with the use of positive reinforcement is a good idea!
Let us know what you find out and if anything works. And I hope the hot weather lets up soon!

PS. Yes, I'd make sure that the other dog is not out in the back while your dog is... make that the "rule" for a while and see if, that, along with some pleasant associations, such as scattering kibble for her to find out there, helps her get over it!

My jack russell will only go to my mother in laws yard to use the bathroom. i think its because she may have more animals that come into her yard than we do. She loves to sniff before going to the bathroom and in our yard she doesnt sniff that much. She will go in our yard if she has to but if she has a choice we go down there. Maybe the front yard has more smells in it than the back yard. i hope that nothing has happened to her in the back yard or anything like that. Good Luck.
