Dog LOVES to Sit Under Me

He's a 10 week old miniature pincher; we've had him for three weeks now. When I play with him, I sometimes will kneel down with both knees on the ground and his favorite place is right underneath me, between my legs. He tries to burrow his way between my knees and then he'll turn around and stick only his head out and chew on his toys. If I get up, he moves.

I read somewhere that small dogs shouldn't be allowed to jump into laps uninvited because it's a form of dominance. Is this the same way? Do I need to stop him until he's "invited"? A friend of mine mentioned that he might be looking for warmth, it's about 70 degrees in our house.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it being dominance. Dominance and Pack Theory has been disproven by science. If you want to read more about it the check out the links in this thread.

It is far more likely that your pup just wants to be close to you!

Your friend could also be correct about the puppy seeking out warmth. My Min Pin has been nick named "the Heat Seeking Missle" by my husband and friend. She spends much of the winter either in our bed under our down comforter or in in her bed in front of the pellet stove with her nose less that an inch from the glass. She also likes to crawl inside my sweatshirts (while I'm wearing them) with only her head poking out through the neck.

Do you think maybe he's just found a place where he feels close to you and safe? He's just finished snuggling up with his mum, so it sounds normal to me.

Thanks for the prompt replies guys! We didn't think it was anything we had to worry about but we just wanted to double-check. You can just google "alpha dog" and get hundreds of results about dog dominance and what signs to look for.

I don't think my little boy is dominant at all Though he does seem to know that he is the man! Just look at him posing for a picture!
