Do pit bulls swim or like water?

growing up in a harbour and having been in our Marine Corps, I do love swimming and sea in general. I am planning to bring Atus with me. He is probably mix with a lab and I know that labs like water, but how about pits? Anyone has a swimmer home?

It depends on the individual dog- even some labs don't like water. My pit mix liked it, but not in the beginning. She would only swim if my other dogs swam.

Thanks Cali. I use to walk him also on the beach and the first time he was curious and scared by the sea and the waves. I believe he never saw it before. Now it's still cold but as soon as we can swim, I'll slowly introduce him to the element.
He is really an energetic dog and it would be nice later to have him joining a water rescue class or something like that.

Honestly, I don't know much about pits at all, but a lot of my friends at the dog park I go to own pits. They say that their dogs are pretty shy about water. They usually don't go in too deep - at least not enough to swim. As posted before me, it's about the dog.

Both Mayday and Gunner love water!

Gunner will swim ... kinda. He thinks he can and does well for 5 minutes then stops paddling. We're getting him a life vest since he enjoys swimming until the point where he thinks he can float. Gunner has always been a water addict. Used to swim in my parents pool, now he has a kiddie pool in the back yard to splash in. We take him to the beach and he splashes around and chases the waves. He lives to get into any water he can - puddles in the road, ocean, bath tub, a bucket, pools, ect.

We left Mayday alone when it came to water, thinking he'd either enjoy it or not. He now races us to the shower and sits in there with the water pouring on him. He jumps in and out of the kiddie pool and sticks his head under the water for 5 seconds at a time. We haven't tried swimming yet, but he certainly loves water.

Be careful though - they will attack under water. Gunner thinks he's saving you, but really he's drowning you.

Oh good! I need pictures of Atus in a life vest!

I'd try him in an area with calm water first. Throw on a long line, training leash or a horse lunge line and go into the water yourself and see if he'll follow. No pressure on him if he doesn't want to go. Some dogs just dislike water.

I'll try that! I have a long training line I used to let him walk without the leash and recall him , and I could use that (it's 8 mt long). He has a blue life vest and I'll take some pics if him at the dog beach

i see lots and lots of pits in the lake all the time, i think it definitely depends on the individual dog... clover now loves water but at first he was very nervous of it, i don't think he'd ever seen water that wasn't in a bowl before i took him to the lake... our first time out, he followed me as i was walking, and he kept trying to step on the surface of the water and had the funniest look when his feet went down to the bottom...
