Barking at other dogs.

Hiya, I have a 10-month old mittelspitz pup. He's usually pretty quiet at walks, but lately he's started to bark at other dogs that walk past us. It usually only happens if the other dog doesn't bark at him first, if it does, then often my pup stays quiet. He still pulls on his leash to get to the other dog, but doesn't bark or growl. He didn't bark at all when he was younger, and I'm worried that this habit will just get worse as time goes on. He also stops a lot on walks, if he hears something coming behind him. He usually just sits down and looks at whoever's coming, and then once the person is past us he'll start walking normally again.

I've started to use treats and call him by his name once he stops/before the other dog reaches us and if he pays attention to me, I'll reward him. This isn't very effective, since the distraction outweighs the treat fairly often. Any ideas what should I do?

Pup sounds a little fearful and reactive.
See if this helps.

Does he have enough socialization with other dogs? Also, what kind of bark is it? Is he friendly towards other dogs?

Solidifying basic obedience in many different environments, plus letting a dog have many different experiences in many different environments (many different stimuli), plus getting him used to other dogs and people are very important. Basic obedience is for him to have the capacity to listen and comply to you, while many experiences helps him to be less reactive to outer stimuli.

But well, if he's already reactive, then I guess that Sophia Yin's method can help:

But well, for that you might need a controlled environment.
I can't try her method with my very reactive dog since I can't control the environment, so I'm going to take him to a trainer for help instead. My dog got parvo when he was young so he could only go out at 6 months, and he only met a few friends, but he got some traumatic events with a few dogs too so that he is very reactive with stranger dogs now. Just imagine how hard it is with a 30kg GSD mix (and the embarrassment lol although many other dogs are reactive too)!

By the way, leash tension can cause frustration or more stress too. When my dog was still half friendly to other dogs, he wanted to sniff them but the tension can cause him wanting to get the other dog and bark.

If in your case, your dog is afraid and insecure thought, you must try to remain calm and be careful with how you pull the leash, as it might worsen her fear/stress and make her more reactive. (see the link Tess posted)
