Barking in the Crate at night

Hello All, First off this is my first post in this forum. So hello

I have a min pin who sleeps in crate. Recently she has started barking when we put her down for the evening or EARLY in the morning. I always make sure she has gone potty before we put her down. My wife is about ready to give her up.

I need to find a way to keep her from barking in her crate and waking the house up. Please help!!!

How much exercise is she getting, and how long is she crated at night? Min pins need a TON of exercise. Kmes described it really well in this post. If she is not getting enough exercise, she may just be waking up early or not wanting to go to bed because she is not tired enough. She shouldn't be crated at night longer than 8 hours.

In addition to plenty of exercise, she may just need to be conditioned to the crate better. You can teach your dog that crate time means calm time. We have some good tips in our http://www.dogforum.com/dog-training...ning-faq-3974/ (#s 10 and 11). The video below also demos really well how to condition a dog to the crate.

How old is she? What does she have in the kennel with her? Where is her kennel? You can try putting one of your dirty stinky shirts in it for her cuddle with. If she is young you can also put a stuffed animal with a portable clock under it to simulate a heart beat...So she has your scent to lay with along with a heart beat....comforting..

First, thanks for the posts...

Lucy is a 5 year old Min Pin. She has slept in a crate all of her life at night. We don't put her in the crate until we go to bed. She is never in the crate more than 7 hours and the crate is in the garage. We have huge back yard that she plays and runs in all day. We moved about 2 years ago and she has been barking ever since.

Any help is appreciated. I want to keep her.

How do you feel about putting the crate next to your bed at night? The barking could be associated with a fear of being alone. Sometimes hearing your breath can help her calm down at night. A dark garage can be scary! :P Is this a change that came upon with the move, the crate being in the garage?

Personally, I would work on some of the conditioning games (build up time) and start actively giving her exercise. Read kmes' post. Dogs don't really exercise themselves (unless you are watching her run circles solid for a few hours? -that's the kind of work she needs). Flirt poles, 101 things to do with a box, food puzzles, agility, jogging together, dog parks, etc.

It couldn't hurt to get her thyroid checked or bloodwork done, but I'm guessing this has to do with boredom and self-reinforced behavior that has become strong habit after years of doing it.

Answering the questions.
My wife didn't like the dog sleeping in our bed and initially we read crating at night was the right thing to do.
We tried early on with the crate next to our bed, my wife is a light sleeper.
Crate is basically in the same place as the other house.
I will read Kmes post.

Keep the ideas coming, i'm up for trying anything.

I crate my two chihuahuas at night. They like it..
What kind of kennel is it? Wire or plastic? If wire, have you tried covering it?
