I was just thinking again about this.

I was volunteering in a shelter -where we took on more damaged dogs and did lots of training with them. One dog I worked with in particular, a GSD who had guarded her whole life-and had a lot of issues-had NO idea what to do with a toy, and no interest in them at all (interest was thoroughly in circling and yelling).

With lots of time, cooing and pretending to have interest in the frisbee-I had her fetching the frisbee happily (once it landed-not in the air) in several weeks. So I think it could be done!

Thanks everyone! I like the suggestion to play with the toy myself. I'll give it a shot. It's obviously not a major problem, but I think it's important for him to have another outlet for his extra energy. Plus, it's fun for me too :-)

I think some dogs are just more playful than others, too. Tegan won't play with toys hardly everm except this one little manatee stuffie he has. He throws it in he air and carries it around, but mostly when he thinks no one is looking or when no one else is home but him and the cat (never now that we live with two other people in a busy house! but in the apartment he did!)

Lyla is my shelter dog and she is interested in toys somewhat. She is MUCH more interested in my shoes, clothes, pillows. She doesn't tear things up, but if it has my scent on it she LOVES to carry and mouth them.... she's a cooky pup!

Only time she ripped something up was in a trantrum... I wasn't feeling well and let tegan on the bed but made her sleep on her bed on the floor (she weighs what I do.. I didn't want her on top of me while i was sick) and she took a pillow off my bed and chewed a big corner off before I realized why she was being so quiet in her corner... lol
