Question Is it okay to get Flexi retractable leashes wet?

Sorry, I hope I haven't posted this in the wrong section! I couldn't really figure out where else to put it though.

Today I just bought a Large Dog (110 lb) Flexi 16ft retractable leash. So far it's been doing great for our black lab Eli! I just got in from playing with him in the creek. He is not good for recall off a leash, so for the past while I've just had him tied up to a long rope so that he can still frolic. However, I found it was getting caught up on stuff in the creek at our new house here so I am trying the retractable. I was just wondering though, is it okay to get them wet? I know it got dunked a couple of times and now I'm worried I may have ruined it. I am just afraid that the stuff will rust inside and mess it up. It is a freshwater creek, so do you think it will be okay? I already threw the package away, but I don't remember seeing anything about water in the warnings. Also, next week (with my dad) I will be going to the beach and taking the leash with me. Marlie (my GSD pup) is good off the leash, but I'm worried that if she gets a little too interested in another dog or some inticing seagulls that she won't listen and come back immediatly. It'll be okay though, it's a private campground so it's not like what you see on the tv shows where there is a person plopped down every 20ft or less with their huge umbrellas and ice chests. ANYWAYS, sorry for rambling, but do you think the saltwater/sand will mess it up? If it's okay with water would it be better for me to rinse it out with freshwater from a hose every evening or should I just not bring it period and look into getting her one of those long 20ft training leads? I'd really only be using it walking her in the camp ground or if she starts ignoring me when I call her back.

So basically:
  1. Is it okay to get wet period?
  2. Do you think I could take it to the beach without wasting it if I rinsed it out every evening? (if it's okay to even get wet?)
Haha, sorry it's so long guys!

P.s. I'll be taking lots of pictures! They (Ace & Marlie) should look absolutly ravishing in their new bandana's I got them today!
