Antler safety?

The only chew toy that Lucy seems to not destroy in five minutes is a deer antler.

Today I bought her one that seems to be sliced in half. Her old one was 'whole' in that it was fully rounded and the hard part of the antler went all the way around. This one I got today seems to have the soft part exposed for chewing. It looks sorta like bone marrow does inside a bone. This soft part is breaking off into small bits when she chews it. It is not splintering or breaking off into chunks that would choke her, just little crumb like pieces. Again, it is very similar to what marrow looks like to me.

Is the middle of a deer antler safe for consumption? Do I need to worry about these bits that she can bite off? At first I think it should be okay and that why they offer the style of antler that is sliced down the middle.

I've wondered the same thing about the Antler's. I have a Chocolate Lab who is aggressive with her toys and the Antler's are the only thing that she can't totally destroy. I've noticed that she is eating little bits and pieces of the antler and also was wondering if they were safe.

I called the company and spoke to the owner who told me the bits are not dangerous. She also told me the antler I got was intended for senior dogs so I should stick to the whole antlers for my tough chewer.

we use his antler during meals when we want him distracted and not begging. He started off with the puppy one (like the senior one it was cut in half). He plowed through it in a week so we bought him the full round one. He doesn't seem as interested in it because he can't get the middle as easy but he'll gnaw on it for hours.

We used to always get antlers for our boxer great dane mix. We also started him off in puppy because we were just getting him used to them. He loved it so much, he chewed it in three days, only stopping to eat and take a potty break. When he got older and to his full size (29 inches), we got him the bigger ones which he loves more than anything. He doesnt chew on it as much as the puppy ones but he still loves them!

The middle is the hardened marrow left from when the antlers were growing, so yes its not dangerous and it probly tastes good (at least to a dog).
