This morning I heard quite the story of an extremely lucky boxer!
A friend of mine took a pet first aid course awhile ago and has now started teaching the course. She never really thought she would ever have to use it for anything major... Maybe just a few minor cuts or bee stings.
Well, the other night on the way to meet her parents and husband for dinner, she saw a boxer get hit by a car. A little girl had let her dogs out of their fence. The boxer ran right in front of a SUV. Luckily the girl stopped at the side walk.
Also very luckily, my friend just happened to have her kit in the car. She said that she spent about 30 minutes working on the dog. The lady who hit it, spent all of that time calling and trying to get a vet.
The entire time the owners just stood there. They didn't do anything to help. And the lady who hit it was actually told by a certain vet in the area (the closest one actually) that she wouldn't see the dog as it wasn't a patient!
Fortunately, a guy stopped to see if he could help. He said that his fiance was a vet tech (ended up being one from my vet's office!) and that they lived a few blocks away. He went home and got her. She came back with a ton of medical supplies and started working. I guess they even had to give this dog some steriods to keep her from going into shock.
As soon as the vet tech said she had everything under control, my friend took off, not really thinking that the dog would actually make it. She just figured that even with the help of a vet tech, the owner's weren't even trying to find a vet. They at one point said that they couldn't afford this.
Then last night as she was out walking her dogs, she was stopped by the vet tech's fiance. He said that they now have the boxer. The owners signed her over shortly after she left and they rushed her into the 24-hour emergency vet clinic. (Its almost an hour away but the vet tech's boss- my vet- was there that night).
They took care of everything. The boxer lost all of the teeth on one side of her face, has some broken facial bones, and needed stitches inside her mouth. She also seems to have some nerve damage to one of her front legs. They aren't sure if it will be temporary or permenant. However she can walk just fine.
They are going to keep her for a while until she is well enough to go to a new home. We think she will actually be adopted by someone we know who has 2 other rescued boxers!
That dog is so lucky!!! It sounded like the owners would have just let her die, had my friend not been there to offer emergency first aid and if a vet tech had not stumbled upon the scene!
