How can I find a handler

Good morning everyone. I just joined this website and I am hoping to get some help. I breed Labrador Retrievers and have been doing so for over 10 years. Over the years I have trained a couple of dogs for the show ring and even entered some shows. Up to now I have not progressed too far. The other day we had a litter, they are five days old. As I sit there and stare at the litter potential I have noticed a beautiful male that has me thinking show dog once again (Frankly I thought it was over)

I should tell you that I am 70 yrs old and I am not really able to do the running around the ring that is required of the sporting dogs. I would like to know how I could find a handler that isn't going to charge me an arm and a leg, until I am sure he would be a serious contender. I am willing to go to the professional handlers later in the game when I believe he can really finish. Along with my age I am on a fixed income and need to watch my money. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank in advance

Hi,

I'm not sure what country you're in, but here in North America we have several different professional handler associations. It's very wise of you to wait until you know he'll be a contender before shelling out the big bucks for a "top" handler. I don't know much about the show scene, but maybe you could try to find a good junior handler to show your pup? Many of them are quite talented and would most likely do it just for the experience in the "big ring". As for how to find them, other then going to a dog show and watching the junior ring.....I have no clue. Maybe someone on here will have a better idea as to where you should look.

Good luck with your future star!

I'd say go to a show and ask around Their are likely websites and stuff-but why don't you talk to the breeders and handlers at the show and find someone that way

Also maybe goto let's say a class... that teach people for the ring and to be handlers.. and find a junior or a person who seems really good ?

Another thing, I don't know if there's one in your area, but the 4-H here has kids that are interested in dog training and showing and is something you could maybe start out with, at least til you feel he may have more potential and then move to the big ring. Could look for a 4-H group that does show handling and Conformation.
