There a plenty of people showing in the ring, for confirmation whose dogs are also titled in the field. Unfortunately, GSDs aren't one of them. However, to get a sch title, the dog must meet some requirements including hip and elbow certification. To get a V rating, (the highest rating possible, in the schutzhund world) they must be titled in confirmation, also.
I actuallly did show Wabbit, my GSD and SCH partner in the AKC beauty shows a couple times. We about got laughed out of the ring...Not only was he not the color of Rin Tin Tin, his head was too blocky, his back was too straight and he didn't stand flat on his hocks! Needless to say, I might have been more disappointed if he placed and looked like an American Shepherd (a completely different breed, in my book). We were actually there for the socialization. |
I know what you mean. First of all I am not a breeder either an expert and I have been to show-ring only a couple of times in some local competes in agility and flyball with my poodle....and only as visitor in the UK show ring for GSDs.
All the dogs we own as family are from working lines and most of them wouldn't be accepted in the show ring! If you watch the video you will see a very different GSD. I just believe that dogs like GSD should be bred for their capability in the field first and then for their beauty...the exact opposite from what happens in reality. Of course not everyone does this but as long as hte judges accept and title dogs like those in the video more and more breeders will bred their dogs this way. I LOVE the GSD and cause of my work as farmer I can see that finding a working line of GSD has become very difficult because many breeders of GSD are breeding dogs for the show-ring only (they want titles) like these dogs in the video. And as the judge said clearly most working-lines GSD don't fit the breed standards...so they cannot compete. They want GSDs with poor legs and poor back...that is what they mean by titling dogs like them in the vid.
What I have seen in European breeders of GSD is that they care less and less for schutzhund titles and they breed dogs with extreme big heads and big foots and poor back just to compete in beauty shows...but for me beautiful GSD is the one who can be the best in the field first.
