Thanks for the info Elana. In the distant past I trained four dobies to CDX titles with a couple of HITs along the way, but the world has turned (lol) since then and rally-o is a very new thing to me. I thought it would be a nice intermediate pre-obedience competition, but not if it will undermine the more formal training. I'll have to look into it more.

One other thing. AKC did pass allowing clubs to add "All American Breed" (mixed breeds) in some of their venues. You do have to get a number from the AKC which requires you to pay them money.

Some club venues will state that they are not supporting mixed breeds at their shows. You have to go to Info Dog to find upcoming AKC shows and events, closing dates, entry fees and if mixed breeds are allowed at that particular show.

As you can imagine, the addition of mixed breed dogs to venues is not without contention in an organization with a mission statement that supports pure bred dogs and breeding.....

I recommend that you anyone interested in showing get a rule book (you can download it as a pdf from AKC website) and read it. Over and over.

Great thread! Vegas is just coming out of the "butt-head" stage (lol, what a perfect description, by the way!) and I found that while she was in it, over-training on my part made her obedience "flat." There was no focus and she would get bored easily. To fix that, I would grab some really awesome treats, get her riled up, do some obedience really fast paced to challenge her and get her into it (but only for like 5 minutes), then zoom around with her and play tug for a minute and leave her wanting more. I only trained every other day for a bit, too. She LOVES obedience!

We are competing for the first time in August, and I'm sooo excited!

If the dogs aren't registered, but you think they are purebreed, then you can get the PAL registration with the AKC. And if not, the AKC now has a mixed breed registration where you can do Obedience, Rally, Agility, etc. with your mixed breed dogs. You can start by taking some Rally classes or get a listing of what all the stations are and how they are performed and start working on them.

Blaze and I do Rally-o classes. hopefully we will be fully ready by December to do one of the shows in novice. I think we will. Our trainer is great and one of the judges for Rally-o, plus no one else is in our class, so we get one on one training for a group price. which is great.

If this beagle stays here, which is looks like he might. Then he will be a rally-o dog aswell. hopefully I can train a beagle for that lol.
