Now I'm kind of leaning towards getting a dog that's a little older. I think I might want to get a trained dog and then take it to a trainer for refresher classes every week or whatever. Then I can actually work WITH him, so he'll listen to me better.

I agree..this sounds like the best idea

Okay... Now I have another question. My friend (who owns a ring-trained Malinois) told me that you have to pay at least 25k for a dog that will only bite when you tell him to. Is this true? I know I've seen some for sale for a LOT less (the lowest I found was 1,800), but are these dogs unsafe?

HUH!!
I seriously doubt that it's 23000$ to train them to bite on command...like-that does not make any sense...

A horse, you can ride, bred well-2000$
A horse, you can ride, bred well, plus stands for ferrier-25000$

Nope-doesn't make any sense at all...I'm not saying your friend is wrong or lying or anything...just that either they have it mixed up, are missing some info?

And if 23000$ is the difference, I know what field of work I am going into RIGHT NOW!

Okay, how do these two look?

"Rogue" on this page:
Dogs for Sale/Sold

He's $6,300 OBO.

Or "Olex" on this page:
Century K9 Protection Dog German Shepherd Belgian Malinois

He's only $1,800, but they have very little information on him. I sent them an email asking for more information, but I haven't heard back yet.

actually.....

I would say thats not far off...police dogs are worth about $40,000 after they are trained...and they don't do much more than bite correctly.

its not teaching them to bite...its teaching them when and how to bite, when to let go and when to NOT bite.

I'll checkur links out when I have more time.

Yeah, that's what I meant. She said "Do you know how much it costs to get a dog that will bite when you tell him to, but not when a child steps on his foot?"

Exactly!

ooo I forgot to go back to your links...I'll do that now.

Rouge looks like he's had som' serious serious training.

neither site talks about lineages or health testing. IMO these seem like dog "factories" cranking out trained dogs.

I still think you should train the dog yourself
