That's exactly how I felt the three times I almost killed people while I was still an Engineer. One actually stood in the middle of the tracks, threw his arms in the air, and I made eye contact just before I lost him under the hood of the train. He jumped at the last minute, so He was fine minus a few choice words my conductor was throwing at him. We figured it was either a stunt or attempted suicide. There is not a more helpless feeling than that situation with full brakes applied and are not stopping fast enough.
Since my time as an engineer, I have a higher value of life, and a lower opinion of stupidity.

I still cringe when I am at a railroad crossing and see someone on the tracks with kids or passengers in the cars. When it is only the driver, they are just idiots that I don't feel sorry for.
