A young bitch can have her first season anywhere from 6 months to 18 months. Sometimes they will have what's called a "silent heat" with very little bleeding, so it is possible you missed it.
However, if you have any male dogs in the area, its likely they will let you know when she goes into heat.
Our girl had her first real heat at 11 months, although in retrospect we realized she had a small silent heat at 7 months. We have an intact male in the house, and he was very interested in her at 7 months, but then that faded, until she went into a full blown heat, at which point we had to separate them!
