When is my Puppy due to have her first season?

Hi
I have a 10 month old cocker spaniel and the vet told me she would have her 1st season after 6 months old. She is now 10 months old and as far as I am aware not had her 1st season. Is it possible that I missed it or is it always as messy as people say ?

Many thanks in advance, Lee

A young bitch can have her first season anywhere from 6 months to 18 months. Sometimes they will have what's called a "silent heat" with very little bleeding, so it is possible you missed it.

However, if you have any male dogs in the area, its likely they will let you know when she goes into heat.

Our girl had her first real heat at 11 months, although in retrospect we realized she had a small silent heat at 7 months. We have an intact male in the house, and he was very interested in her at 7 months, but then that faded, until she went into a full blown heat, at which point we had to separate them!
