Tear stains

I have a 9-12 month old cocker spaniel (not sure of exact age) who has really bad year stains. I've grown up with cocker spaniels my whole life and never had any with this problem. I've tried changing the food and everything, but nothing helps. I'm currently stationed in 29 Palms, CA where it is very hot and sandy. Could the sand be affectin his eyes? I also have a white husky and a pit, and neither of them have tearing at all. I shave the hair on the sides of his muzzles and wipe the area with a diluted hydrogen peroxide mixture and it helps for a few days, but it always comes back.

i heard you can buy tear stain remover and that helps. my dog gets them nowhere near as bad they just harden up and crumble really. Just try a warm wet cloth on that area daily see if that helps

I have been reading more and more recently that tear stains have as much, or more, to do with the shape of the dog's eyes than factors like artificial food coloring and minerals in the water. So if you are dedicated to clearing them up, it really might be a lifelong battle with the H202 or another disinfectant. Since the peroxide does work temporarily, and the only marketed remedy that really works (Angel Eyes) is an antibiotic, I would guess that there is also some form of low-level, surface bacterial (maybe fungal) infection involved. You could try Angel Eyes and see if that has a longer-lasting impact than the H202, but then it's iffy as to whether you want your dog permanently on an antibiotic.
