It sounds like you are doing good with the food. if you are doing raw meat from the market you may want to look at supplements, such as salmon oil and prozyme. Certain pet stores do sell raw meats... it includes bone and organs ground up in the meat. But what you are doing now is cheaper. just don't cook the bone!! It can splinter and scrape/puncture the intestines.

I also do give her raw eggs from time to time, usually every 1-4 months and just 1/3 an egg each time. Is there more benefits from doing it daily? I have three small dogs so I could split one egg between them all for smaller portions. Please let me know how much egg she should be getting. Sometimes she is offered boiled and scrambled.... is raw the best way?
Shes 6lbs chihuahua/maltese, very high energy. 7 months old.
She also gets canned food, but only like 4 tbsp per day. We mix the veggies and the egg in with this usually. We use a variety of different brands, (ceasors, beneful, iams and blue buffalo usually)

The vet didn't mention anything about any scrapings, or even doing one in the future. He seemed pretty dam convinced as soon as he seen it as to what it was. He said its common in chihuahuas. Daisy was treated with revolution, so I don't think its a parasite. (I read maybe it was sarcoptic, but my other dogs or animals did not get anything.) Looking at other pictures of summer itch. Hers is VERY mild, maybe like 5 small scabs in each ear, with some redness around them. I could try get a pic if that might help?

Her raw diet includes fish every friday, she has salmon at least once per month but eats other fish fillets like mackerel, rainbow trout, cat fish, tuna, yellow fish etc. She also has prawns, oysters, muscles and other sea creatures on occasions. We try to give her a good variety of meat types since I was told this is the key to feeding raw. Will she still need the supplements? Where would I get Prozyme? I have never heard of this product.

She gets seaweed powder and garlic powder supplements. And a few flax seeds once a month.

Is there a reason why the meat needs to be supplemented if its from the grocery store? I was offered things like guts, eye balls and leftover from the farmer... should I get this to make it a more 'complete' meal.

Is Blue Buffalo a good brand? The ingredients seemed good to me, but I'm no expert.

I give my dog (chihuahua mix about 11 pounds) one raw egg a day. If I make hard boiled eggs for myself, I give him some just as a treat. Its up to you how to feed the egg. My boy just laps it right out of a bowl. It's protein and it has the omegas in it so it helps with the skin and coat. Personally, I wouldn't feed Iams or beneful. Anything found in the grocery or Target generally isn't good food. Just read the label, and stay away from corn, wheat, and soy.

Okay thanks for the info, I'll start introducing more raw egg into their meal plans! I'm sure the omegas will be good for her, since it is a skin condition.

I never thought about making sure my canned food was all meat too. They make the food look so good on the adverts and labels that even I want to eat it! lol. I was feeding it more as a treat, because they love it... but I guess if your going to put anything into your dog you should make sure its all the best stuff.

skin problems

Hi I am also new to this forum and was just reading through some posts on issues that I've delt with. Our springer spaniel had skin problems. So I agree with switching to "more natural diet". I also wanted to share that while we did not have good results with using ointments I started doing a lot of research about natural remedies. I have always had the best luck with that myself. I searched and searched and decided to try a product called vet aid. It's become my "one for all" around my house. I swear by it. It contains from sea salt which makes complete sense why it heals so well. I'm big on "natural" so have always gone to the ocean if I myself have had any kind of skin problem. I'm very allergic to poisen ivy. So just thought I would share my experience. Good Luck! And let me know if you try it I would be curious to know if you have the same results as me.
P.S. better a little late then never
