My old dog died of cancer, and I now have a young flatcoat and I know they are prone to certain types of cancer. Is there anyone out there with experience or veterinary knowledge that could help me give my new girl a good chance of not developing the disease? She already eats mostly raw food, only eating dry food when we go away.
i'm not a vet but i do have cancer knowledge. avoid pesticides and herbicides and artificial anything. use whole organic foods. cruciferous veg ( broccoli cabbage etc) and high antioxident foods (berries, prunes, barley, gala apples, etc) a few times a week. be vigilant about health checks to catch anything early and keep the pup lean and fit
edited to add....i assumed you know about human foodno-nos for dogs since you feed raw but i shoukd add: make sure you check any human foods you want to feed for safety in dogs. some should only be given in small amounts and some not at all.
I was going to say foods high in antioxidants like awp said. There is a line of products called Cranimals that i remember reading recently could help prevent cancer. Here is a link in case you're interested: Cranimals - Brand LuckyDogVitamin.com. I believe the Very Berry product is the one that is anti-carcinogenic.
You can feed the foods high in anti-oxidants and feed a good diet but genetics will play a large part in whether your dog gets cancer and what kind of cancer...
I'll add *spay her.* It's been awhile since I've read stats but something like over half of unspayed dogs get mammary tumors and half of those tumors are malignant. One of our females got mammary tumors, and the biopsies suggested they could be malignant--it's been almost three years now and we still fret over her--not fun, even if she appears fine.
Since you have a breed that is prone to certain types of cancers it sounds like the breed is genetically prone to those types of cancers. I'd ask the vet about doing yearly screenings for them, most cancers have a higher cure rate if caught early.
