ok, Iam at a complete loss

a few weeks ago, Critter began having diarhea. The I can't hold it for even a minute kind. I've had to clean up more messes than I'd like to admit. You could let her out and she would go, only to have another movement within minutes.

Anyway, I recently changed foods on the other dogs and had given her a few kibbles of it (literally like 3) and then this started. So even though shes always had an iron stomach, I assumed it was the food, and put her on a bland diet.

She continued to have problems on and off for the next four days. Then I came home to blood and mucus in the stool.

So I took her and a sample into the vet. They did a full senior panel bloodwork on her and did an in house on the sample of stool as well as sent it away to the lab.

He sent me home with Flagyl just in case while we awaited results.

results come back clean. No parasites, no bacteria, no problems. Blood is perfect too.

in the mean time, she begins to have normal movements again after starting the flagyl. I was only given a few days supply so it ran out quickly.

So yesterday and today the stool became loose again. I just got home and there is blood and mucus on my floor.

Iam calling the vet first thing in the morning for a great big WTH session with him. Iam completely at a loss as to wth is wrong with my dog.

She is eating and drinking and acting normal.

thoughts anyone???? iam going to pull my hair out. Diarhea and carpet don't mix well.

Giardia? My golden retriever had it multiple times and at times his diarrhea was bloody and mucousy. My vet said it doesn't always show up in the tests and it's hard to kill. And of course, the vaccine for it isn't 100% effective. :/

At the time our dog was eating Science Diet (I didn't know better then). We switched him to Blue Buffalo and his symptoms went away. I don't know if it was just that once he had a higher quality food, he was able to fight it off or what.

EDITED TO ADD: Canned pumpkin will help with diarrhea. A couple tablespoons of plain old canned pumpkin (not the seasoned stuff for pies) should help firm things up. Amazingly, canned pumpkin will also help a dog with constipation.

I was hoping som'one would say som'thing like that!! I also talked to a vet tech friend today at work and he said that cocidia is hard to spot in the stool also. I guess perhaps I need a simple retest?

I can't think of anything else it could be, this dog is a stress case, so I thought ulcer, but that should show up on the bloodwork.

I would say ulcer but I believe the blood comes out dark no? In ferrets it looks black and tarry or black and runny...

I was going to say giardia or cocidia. My vet said sometimes these just have to be ruled out but normally they show up in fecal as high count of bacteria. Its tough! Mucous normally means something in the intestine if I am correct.

Let us know how it goes. I hear ya on the carpet issue! We put tile in our house when we had it built b/c of Harvicks explosive uncontrollable diarrhea he had due to Blue Buffalo being too harsh on his stomach...

speaking of which...what is she eating? You said you didnt change her food but Harvick was on Blue for at least 4-5 months before he started to have diarrhea.

shes been on wellness/kirklands for a long time. I gave her som' TOTW and this started within the same day...its probably a coincedence. She had sooo little of it and this dog could eat broken glass and digest it fine .

now shes on either oatmeal or rice with a little canned kirklands. I have been mixing in calcium to firm up the stools, and that has helped, but its obviously just a bandaid. I wasn't aware that things could be missed in stool samples, thats why I was kinda panicking.

Its red blood, so it must be in the lower intestine. The mucus is minor, but its there.

I want tile SOOOO bad. Iam psuedo saving up for it.

i'd say something like giardia as well... did you get a list of all the things that they checked for? seems like if they aren't looking for something then they wouldn't be able to find it, if that makes sense...

well at $50 or whatever bucks, they shouldn't be missing things if they are there imo LOL

my vet tech buddy said that alot of places goof up fecals, or don't check them thoroughly...I hope thats not the case. I really like this vet office.

i totally agree with that. i mean vet care is expensive, they should be getting it right the first time... hopefully you'll get a good answer tomorrow... poor critter, an upset tummy sucks... (so does cleaning up after an upset tummy)
