My little pups first season????

Hello to you all.. New member here!!
Need some help please, my little pup is now 9 months old and just before Christmas she started to bleed, her first season we thought!! Lasted about a week as I have read was normal.
Then she has had another 2 times of bleeding since. Its not too heavy but dont know whats happening,
Is it because she is still a pup?? Also not had the 'male dog' attention round our garden which we have been warned about! Any advice would be great.

Why isn't she spayed? Why haven't you called the vet?

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.

Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. Please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. It will also lower her risk to several types of cancer .

I hope this helped.

I would suggest talking to your vet about this. I would also discuss spaying your dog with the vet.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for your replies. It has put my mind at rest knowing it comes in 3 cycles. We was thinkin of letting her have pups at some point in her life, but at what age can you have her spayed? I thought she was still too young???

most vets will spay as young as 6 months.

You can discuss it with your vet

definitely discuss it with your vet... you should also discuss all of the health tests and risks that you should consider before you think about breeding her...

Not sure what breed she is (?)

But as for letting her have a litter. you dor elize there is no money to be made in a healthy well bred litter?
Between show or field trial costs.
OFA exams/tests.
Stud fees.
Emergency c-sections if needed.
Puppy shots.
extra food.
supplies to build a good whelping box with pig rails.
vet care.

even the best breeders end up in the red.

I'd get her to a vet asap, as in today! Bloody discharge in the weeks post-cycle can indicate pyometra (an infected uterus).

That is an emergency situation and would require the bitch to be spayed immediately. While it's not common to happen after the first heat I've seen it at work more than once.

A normal estrus from beginning to end lasts about 30 days max. If this started around Christmas her heat cycle should be well over with, which is why I would suspect Pyometra at this point, which generally occurs 2-6 weeks following a heat cycle.

When a bitch develops Pyometra the uterus fills with pus and becomes extremely distended. The uterus will eventually burst causing the dog to become septic and death is a very real possibility.

It could be a more mundane cause but I would take no risk and make sure she is seen by a vet today.

When a dog bleeds and you don't know why-it's vet time. No joke-vet time.
