My dog killed a Rat!

We found a Rat in the side yard where our dog likes to go potty it looked like she had been playing with it. We dont know if it bit her or not. She's not acting weird or showing signs of any sickness. Should we be worried?

Look her over to see if she's been scratched or bitten. I'm assuming she's up to date on her rabies shot. I wouldn't be too concerned. Keep an eye on her and around your yard - rats are not solitary.

I've grown up in a rural area and my grandparents' dogs always killed rats and had no problems. Our dogs in the past have killed them too so I don't think it's something you need to be alarmed over (but of course you can always put a call into your vet and ask to be safe).

My dogs has been bitten by a chipmunk... chipmunk lost, but the dog did need antibiotics for the wound. He was bitten right under the eye.

That said, most of the time the hunter is not harmed.

I'd keep an eye out for the dog getting worms (in the stool...or if he starts "scooting" on the floor). He's probably on something already but just in case.

On one hand, I'd be very proud of my dog (I hate rats).
On the other hand, I don't know that doggie licks would ever be as much frun

When he was younger my terrier Shadow used to kill rats all the time. I'd go out in the yard and find the rats laid out dead on their side not a mark on them. Shadow never got sick from messing with them, or bitten.

That said I'd check your dog for bite wounds and in case she did get bitten keep an eye on her for abscesses.

The only real worry I'd have is if she ate any of the rat. If she did and the rat got into poison before your dog got to it, that could be a problem. Playing with it shouldn't hurt her even if it did eat poison, your dog would actually need to actually eat the rat.

Coco, the mighty hunter, caught a mouse! Finally managed to get it off her, she was not about to let her prize go.
