My dog is bleeding from his bum and has something stuck there :S

Hi, I have just signed to this forum as it is too late to take my dog to the vets, and I am not entirely sure what to do!

Earlier this evening my dog had constipation, but I didn't think anything of it. However, at about half past eleven, he began retching and threw up on the carpet, not too much though.

After this, he was very quiet and went and sat in a corner he never usually sits in, and began licking his bum, but for the most part just sat there quietly. Again, I didn't think much of it, but then I tapped up on the sofa to give him permission to sit on it, and he just wouldn't budge. It took a good ten minutes or so of coaxing to get him to move, and when he did, there was a wet patch with a little bit of blood where he had been sat.

I took him out to the kitchen, and when there he had a good drink of water. While he was drinking I lifted up his tail, and coming out of his bum is a big round "thing". I am totally unsure of what it is. I'm not sure if it's poo, and he is really constipated, or if it's something else, though what it could be, I do not know. It had some blood on it, and it seems it keeps bleeding, hence why my dog keeps licking it. Because of the licking he is now panting quite a lot.

Obviously, I hope to get my mum to take him to the vet's tomorrow, but because it is so late and I only discovered the bum problem about twenty minutes ago, I thought it best to ask for some advice.

Does anybody know what this could be, or have had a dog who has experienced this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My dog is a male Scottish Terrier, and is 13 next month. He has been eating and drinking fine recently and, apart from the odd stomach bug, has always been of good health. We don't give him tidbits anymore, and he usually eats wet food in the morning and dry food in the evening. Unless someone has been giving him the cheeky scrap lately, or has gotten his diet mixed up, I don't know what could cause this?

Thanks! :)

Oh god! It's really really late (I live in England, it's 1 o'clock in the morning here), and my mum is in bed, and none of our local vets will be open. They aren't emergency ones. Do you think he will be okay until the morning? I could wait for my dad to come home, but he works nights, so that could be anything between half two and four. I can't drive as I'm only 15. I'm going to wait up with my dog though.

Do you know what it is? How can it be dangerous?

This could be very dangerous if you don't get him to a vet ASAP. Most vets have an emergency number you can call after hours. Yes it will be expensive, but your dogs life may depend on it. As for what's going on... I couldn't tell you for sure but it sounds like he could have a blockage of some sort. Please call your vet.

I've woken my mum up but she isn't bothered. She says he will be fine :S

I've just rung my dad. He will be back in a couple of hours. I'm hoping we will be able to take him to the vets then. Until then, there isn't much I can do. I'm just going to sit with him. We are sat in the kitchen. I thought that's the best place because it's cool in there and his water is there. Do you think he will be okay for a couple of hours?

thankyou for the help!

What, so you're saying he might die or something in until my dad get's home?!

I don't know what to do, there's nothing I can do. Like I say, my mum just isn't bothered and has gone back to sleep, she doesn't seem to care, and I can't drive, I'm only 15! Our local vets is about a 10-15 minute walk away. There website says it's 24 hour emergency (I didn't think it was). I could walk there, but I have no money. I'm going to have to wait for my dad! :dog-cry: :(

I've just tried ringing the vets but no answer. There was a voicemail thing saying they are closed.

And I haven't touched it at all, but he is still licking it and it is still bleeding. It isn't bleeding heavily though, not like blood dripping everywhere.

yea its urgent and the dog should seriously be at a vet, I understand you are young, this is your parents responsibility and I feel bad for the dog that your mother doesnt care. I cant read this anymore as it breaks my heart, the dog is in some serious danger, possibly pain and definitely discomfort. GL

I've rung another emergency vets for advice, and the lady said to keep him from licking it, and to stay up with him until my dad gets home. She said if it's a growth it isn't too serious, but if it's skin that has come out of his bottom, then it is serious. I'm not entirely sure which it is, though I am hoping for the former.

He just did the mother of all farts though, which I am hoping is a good sign.

My dad said to me on the phone just now though that it's probably constipation, and that he had the runs earlier yesterday, and I have noticed he has been passing wind lately. But my dad said that last week, the dog had eaten something funny and had the runs then constipation, and had a boulder of poo stuck in his bum which he could see, and that the blood is from where he is straining it pops the blood vessels in his bum. But he was fine when he managed to get it out (naturally, my dad didn't touch it).

So I'm just going to wait up with him until my dad arrives.

Thankyou for the advice! I'm hoping he will be okay and it's nothing a trip to the vets can't sort out. There is an out of hours charge of £170, or I can wait till 8.30 and take him to our normal vets. That's 5 hours and 55 minutes from now. The vet on the phone said wait until my dad arrives though.

Btw, it's not that my mum doesn't care, it's just that she was very, very tired and when I woke her up I don't think she understood what I was saying or the urgency.

Well, he has been taken to various different vets, and he is now in the hands of professionals. They say it's not fantastic news. It's all very expensive but he is our dog and we love him and he is worth it.

He is putting our dog, Shane, under local anasthetic, and is shaving round the area and doing an examination/exploration. If there is something he can do he is going to castrate him and see what he can do.

The other vets thought it was a rectal prolapse, but the vet thinks it is too large to be that, and has a suspicion it may be cancer. If this isn't the case, however, he will do all he can. But if it is, and it potentially means he has to cut the dog open, he has said it will be very expensive, not fully effective, and at 13, it would be kinder to "call it a day". We agreed as our dog is the most wonderful, precious thing in the world to us, but the last thing we want is to see him in pain or agony.

But we won't know the diagnosis until after the exploaration/examination. We are keeping everything crossed that something can be done, but I have also prepared myself for the worst, and understand what is best for my beautiful dog, and know that he has lived a good, long, fulfilled life. The average age a Scottie lives to is about 11, so he has had a good run, if that is the case.

Again, thankyou for the advice. I'm praying he'll be okay. He has been able to poo, has been drinking water fine, has slept a little bit and did throw up, but just to get it out of his system I think. So he seemed fairly comfortable and happy when I was with him. I hope he will be alright!

I know, but like I said, thankyou for the help. I understand he lived to a grand old age. He was 13 next month and most Scotties only live until 10-11. And I really would not have wanted him to have been in any pain.

It shows just how quick cancer can be :(
It turns out the thing stuck in his bum was a cancerous growth/lump. But the vet truly was the best in our area, well, we had to drive an hour away to get to him, but our dog was in the best hands, and he wasn't one of these vets trying to rip you for your money. He did all he could. And as he said, "If you don't try, you don't win."

I am so sorry to hear that he passed away...13 years is grand age for a Scottie :) I'm sure he had a wonderful life with you! Sending lots of hugs your way :)
