Mom's dog chewed puppy's leg off.....

My mom's shiba gave birth Saturday to a healthy male. When I visited yesterday (Sunday) the puppy was missing his hind leg up to his knee. Why would this happen? I believe she was gonna call the vet and ask but I didn't get to stick around long enough to know if he anything to say.

I don't think the why is the big deal here-it's IF this pup is going to get to the vet! That's incredibly painful and a vet can likely determine or shed light on why/what happened.

She doesn't need to CALL the vet. She needs to take this puppy to the vet. Do you know if she has done so yet?

No I do not and will not know as I don't live near her and never have coordinating schedules so I can talk to her. We are not stupid or careless enough to not take them to the vet so until I get a chance to speak with her (which will be quite a while) the question is why.

Definitely go to the vet. The only thing I can think of is that she may have done it accidentally while trying to chew off the umbilical cord if your mom didn't assist in the birth.

i have heard of females getting over excited while cleaning newborns and in some species it isn't uncommon from a female to cannibolize the newborn because of stress, but i'm not sure if that could be that case, nor am i certain if it is something that you would expect in dogs. i would be very concerned about the mother's behavior toward the puppy, and her behavior in general....
also, are you certain it was "chewed-off" and the pup wasn't born with some sort of deffect?

please forgive my saying so, but your first post was very vague about the puppy's vet care and it isn't surprising that people would show concern for this...
please keep us posted as to what you find out from your mother and the vet...

Yes I will and sorry that my return post was so snappy. Not that it's a good excuse but when I was trying to type that I wasn't in the best of moods but all is good now. Yeah the dog was a puppy mill rescue that was already pregnant when she got her. She was checked by a vet and he told her that she could terminate but she was already past half term and she did not want to. The vet has been involved in the whole process and checked mom and pup after delivery. Any other details I do not know. Again sorry for being cranky with ya'll but I've also read posts on here where all that's accomplished is the person being attacked over lack of vet care. Thanks for the posts. I'll keep ya updated on any info I receive.
