Listerine

I heard something really disturbing today from the surgeon at the vet hospital I worked at up in MD. We were catching up and she mentioned her dog passed away. He was this really cute and sweet brindle Boston Terrier named Brindle. He was only around Emmy's age.

She said one of her sons thought it would be funny to spray Listerine spray into Brindle's mouth because his breath was stinky and the dog started having violent convulsions and so she rushed him to a vet and they anesthetized him to stop the convulsions but when he came out from the anesthesia he was still having jitters and convulsions except they were less intense, so she took him home to have him on IV's all night with meds, and she thought he seemed to be getting better, but overnight his IV slipped out and he seemed to get worse so she took him to the clinic again where they got another IV in him. Then she got him home again and he fell asleep and she figured he just needed rest and it turned out when she went to check on him, he had slipped into a coma and passed away.

So, be careful about what human products you use on your pets.

That is so sad. Her son must feel terrible! Poor thing I can picture a lot of kids doing something like that without thinking. You never know what can be toxic to a dog. So sad

Unfotunately, though her child obviously didn't know Listerine could be potentially harmful, he is a teenager. But I can totally imagine how he would feel terrible as well.

Not surpising considering that it is 52% rubbing alcohol and he was a small dog, what a shame.

Ahh! to be honest after I left the vet I was wondering what in the spray might've done that to him or if it was just a reaction to the individual dog, but that does make sense all the alcohol in it.
