Kennel Cough

I just got a puppy from a local shelter. His name is Domino. He is a lab/shepard mix and about 12 weeks old now. When I first got him I took him to the vet that my future mother-in-law recommended right away to get him checked out (monday). The vet said that he was fine (what I thought was a very mild exam...he did not check his temp or do a fecal only felt around and listened to his heart. After I had to ask him about when to bring him back for the rest of his shots and such he told me.

The next evening Domino started to develop a little cough. It was very small and very infrequent. By Wednesday evening he was coughing a lot. Thursday morning I called the vet again to set up an appointment for that evening.

I got to the vet and told him that Domino had developed a cough and it was becoming very frequent and that I had to assume it was kennel cough because he is young and just came from a shelter. The vet felt his throat a little bit and told me he had tonsillitis and that he was not contagious.

Fast forwarding to Saturday....I was two hours away visiting my family having a bridal shower for me. My grandpa was watching Domino in the other room and after the shower I went to check on them. They had both fallen asleep together (aww). When I went to pick Domino up to take him outside he had become very ill. He did not want to open his eyes or stand up and he was having trouble breathing. My mom went with me to take him to the emergency vet.

The vet told me that he had a severe upper respitory infection and a little bit of kennel cough. She put Domino in a nebulizer for 20 minutes (helped clear him up a lot!) and told me to keep giving him the antibiotic (SMZ) the other vet put him on and to also give him clavamox.

His coughing and snotting (for lack of a better word) has improved but it still fairly frequent. Especially at night. He will cough and hack all night long. It is now Thursday. He doesn't have very many doses of meds left. Maybe enough for 2 or 3 days (liquid form).

I guess my question is...when should I expect the coughing and snotting to stop? He is keeping me, my fiance, and himself up all night long. The vet said he should be better in about a week and that is quickly approaching. How long does it take the meds to kick in?

Any help or advice would be appreciated He is supposed to have a follow up appointment this weekend as advised, but I want to make him and us as comfortable as possible until then. We are doing everything advised including taking him in the bathroom with us when we shower for the steam and wiping his nose off when he snots.

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps a follow up vet visit is in order?
It certainly won't hurt!
That way the vet can check on Domino's progress and give you more meds if necessary.

Ditto the above. The meds may not be working if you have seen zero improvement

Poor little fella is really having a tough time! Its terribly stressful for a dog to be in a shelter, and then he is adjusting to a new home, so its no wonder he succumbed to an infection. Now he has a good life with you and can start to gain his strength! It sounds to me like he needs continuing care, and may not be ready to get off the antibiotics. If you are going to run out of meds before his appointment, you might try to change your appointment to earlier, to check with the vet, so if indeed he should stay on meds, there is no gap time for the germs to re-take over his respiratory system.

You can also do all you can to boost the little guy's immune system. That would mean the best quality food you can afford, lots of clean water, lots of rest, and minimize the stress he is under. Until he is feeling totally well, maybe make sure he leads a relatively quiet life, ie its not the time to haul him around to visit all your friends, lots of other dogs, and in general allow him to get exhausted. Think about taking care of a young child who is sick, he/she does not go to school or play dates, and rests on the couch with chicken soup! Find the doggy equivalent of this, and he can get better sooner. He is, after all, just a baby still, the canine equivalent of a toddler, and he might not know to take it easy himself without your guidance.

Thanks so much for the advice. He does still play pretty hard, so I will try to keep him more calm and give the vet a ring to see what she has to say. I haven't found a good one yet where I live so I am going to hope there are enough meds that will last until this weekend when I can take him back to the animal hospital I took him to on Saturday for a check-up (they are FANTASTIC there...my family has always used them) I'm gonna name drop Gradys Animal Hospital for anyone in the Cincinnati area. Maybe I could get them to order a refil for me over the phone if he needs them?? Again, thanks and I will be continuing to monitor the little guy!

Oh my gosh he is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE! Thank you for posting pics!

Yes, I think playing it safe with a little quiet time for the little guy is a good plan. Little pups can go downhill really fast, as you experienced. They are so vulnerable at this age, and if he's got a respiratory infection, that puts him at risk for more germs taking advantage because the tissues are already inflamed.

Please keep us updated! What a lovely puppy!

Follow up is in order for sure-but you know what-I'd choose a different vet then your first vet. That first exam sounds like he didn't check thoroughly and when a dog from a SHELTER shows up coughing and is that young-well he should have been really careful-instead he basically sent you home with a pat on the back. So I would really suggest a follow up visit with a different vet. Glad your choosing a different vet!!!

And your pup is ADORABLE!!

Oh my goodness Mr. Domino is doing so much better!! The meds must have taken over and killed the germies yesterday while I was at work! He barely coughed at all, and we took it easy last night, and he only woke up twice last night to potty with VERY minimal coughing! FINALLY!!

That's such great news! Sometimes they bounce back almost as fast as they can get sick! Its wonderful he's on the up and up!

What a CUUUUTE boy!

PS. I see you are in the fire/rescue service? We are kindred spirits then! (well I used to do volunteer EMT work for my town)
