Itching spot on tail...?

this weekend we had to leave the state just for the weekend. well my dog before we left had been itching his tail alot more then usual. todzy we come home to see a swollen bump with no hair and its bleeding on the base of my Great Danes tail. i first noticed his muzzle area was all bumpy and red also. we did have fleas but that was months ago and we gave all the dogs flea and tick baths and we got them that flea and tick control gel stuff you put on the back of there neck and down there spine about a month ago. does anyone have any idea what it could be..? heres some pictures of what we came home to..

Oh ouch! That looks painful poor guy....well, it could be a hot spot or two, but Im wondering if he is having a reaction to someting. It would be easy to say "food related" but to me it looks like either a reation to a bite (from a spider?), or almost chemical in nature.
The fact it is itchy is tells me that it is more then likely an allergic reation to something. Have you changed any floor cleaners? Did you add anything new to the house? Treated the yard with anything?
You could try a hot spot treatment that has cortasone in it to cool of the "anger" so to speek and take the itch away. But honestly I'd take him to the vet and have them give him some steroid shots to help stop the itch. They also may need to put him on antibiotics or do a skin scrape. Poor dear. Please keep us posted and let us know how he's doing.
