Heat in the point of hip

Hello all, this is my first post here! I have a 4 year old Sheltie, Sophie; papered, but since my parents bought here I have no idea if her parents underwent genetic testing for hip displaysia.

Recently, 3 days ago at most, she started limping pretty severely on her back right leg. There is heat in that hip, but not in the other. She was a little protest-y to let me try and do a range of motion test on her, but she generally doesn't like people handling her feet. She did yelp at me one time when I moved her leg back, but when I went back and did the same motion again, she did not. I'm wondering how hip dysplaysia presents, more specifically if it can occur suddenly or if it is slow to make itself known. Or, maybe this is just a pulled muscle? She and her sister (also a sheltie) and the cat like to play chasing games around the house, Sophie likes to slide on the wood floors under furniture, and often cuts tight corners as well. Outside in our backyard, its the same thing--she loves to run/be chased.

Help is appreciated!

Hi Sinman,

Dogs of all ages are suject to HD. I think it can come on suddenly but not ever having a dog with Hip Dysplasia, perhaps one of the other members could be of more assistance.

Your best bet is to get her into the Vet; they may want to take an x-ray inorder to know more about her situation. If she is diagnosed with HD, there are many things you can do to make her more comfortable but getting a professional opinion is your first step.

I also wanted to mention, that even if her parents were tested (OFA or PennHip)
and passed, that doesn't necessarily mean that their offspring wont develop Hip Dysplasia somewhere down the line. The risk may be lessor but there is no guarantee.

Hoping for the best possible diagnosis/outcome for your little Sophie

Well, I went out to the barn this morning (I am also a horse owner--hence why I'm into self-diagnosing, lol) and when I came back after lunch, she was also limping on her left foreleg. This time its her actual foot, one of her toes is a little swollen, but not hot. She's hobbling around the house now, I feel so sorry for her because she just has to follow us from room to room, unlike her sister who can't be bothered to move unless there's food or attention involved. My dog is falling apart!

I'm going to give the vet a call tomorrow when I get off from work, and see how much their xrays are, but I think before I schedule and appointment I'm going to give it a day or two and see if the heat/limping goes down, gets worse or stays the same.
