Good and Bad news

Well, I just returned from the Vet with Cleo and there is good and bad news. First, the good news. She lost another 5 lbs, and was in good spirits. The bad news: She was diagnosed with Degenerative Valve disease. It is a common disease for smaller breeds, but I never thought my little girl would have ever gotten old. The other bad news is the lump on her leg. It is a good possibility that it is cancer. When I recover from the Missy money pit, I am going to take Cleo in, have it removed, and tested. I am a little beside myself. I have had cleo since she was little more than a month old. I guess I knew the day would come when her age would become a factor, but it sure seems like it came quickly.

Anyway, I am off to the grocery store to refill the house, and do some thinking.

*BIG HUGS* You know-lots and lots of dogs get fatty lumps or just abscesses so my *fingers are crossed* and my money is on benign-and I'm not a betting woman {{Healthy Cleo Vibes}}

I personally don't know much on DMVD (It is mitral valves right?) so I looked up some linkies for you-so you don't have to google when you get back from grocery shopping. I recommend printing them up, getting on the couch and pulling up a scent hound or two to keep you warm *HUGS*

Degenerative mitral valve disease in dogs
Quote:
As long as the mitral valve disease only causes mild heart murmur, it can be treated with dietary changes. Keeping your dog on a diet low in sodium is important. Some breeders of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs have noticed improvements when giving their dogs Co-enzyme Q10, but this treatment has not been scientifically confirmed for dogs. A number of studies have however showed that Co-enzyme Q10 can be used to improve the condition for patients with certain types of cardiac disease.

I hope your future diagnosis are good for you. Geriatrics suck but beat the alternative.
My sister just dodged the leg lump cancer bullet with her 14yo Portie and I hope you can too.
Hopefully there will be treatment options for her heart too. Our westie, Tag, lived three years on heart meds. Every 6 month check the vet was surprised he was still able to be about and enjoy life.
Dogs are amazing.

i'm terribly sorry for the bad news. i'm in the same boat right now and i know how hard it is to have something like this eating at your mind. i also know how helpful kind and thoughtful words are during these times.

i hope all goes well and she remains in great spirits and happy. you and cleo are in my prayers.

Now that I look closer at her birth date She is about 10. Beagles are really good dogs, but the purebreds like her are plagued with many genetic issues. The doc said it definitely wasn't a fatty lump. I felt a little closer and it has a hard center mass. So 50/50 chance for Cancer now.

I already have her dietary issues changed. Unfortunately, beagles are notorious for heart issues along side thyroid. Looks like my little girl has the same luck that I have.

Doc said we would send the tumor out to a lab, and see what came back. Because of the area it is in, it will be hard to get it all with a surgery. She also said amputation was an option, but I don't know about that. I'm a little twisted right now. Tonight after I put groceries away, and dinner, I am going to take her out tracking. She always loves that and even if she loses the scent it will help me clear my head.

Thanks all

I must have missed this thread!

Iam so sorry.

Personally, i wouldn't amputate, considering her wieght and all..it would ruin her other joints pretty fast wouldn't it?

make sure they x ray her first too...if the cancer has spread, you may want to forgo surgery.
