Question Giving Medicine without Food?

We always give Kelsey medicine wrapped in cheese or salami. The vets said she is to get no treats, human food, not even bones until her urinalysis comes back clean.

Nic just gave her her medicine with nothing and was a little difficult. She was fighting him trying to spit it out and we finally put it in a small piece of cheese.

Do you have any suggestions to make it easier for her to take? Or do you think a small amount of cheese will be okay?

Is it in pill form? or does it need to be chewed up? If it's not too large I would try putting it down her throat. If you can get it towards the back of her mouth even and hold her mouth shut until she swallows. That's probably what you already tried but I don't know what else you could do if you aren't supposed to give her any food. Poor thing. Is she not supposed to have any food at all? If so for how long before and after the pill? Poor thing.

i'm in the same predicament. layla's tummy is still healing from parvo so i can't give her much of anything except meds and vet prescribed can food. i guess little pills hidden in canned food?

i've always just popped the pill in their mouth and held their muzzle closed until swallowed. any advice helps!

She can have her dinner and breakfast just nothing other than that. It is soft food but I am thinking I can save a little next time and put the pill in that.

She can't have anything other than her prescription food for 2 weeks.

I can't see why using her prescription food would be a problem. That seems like the wisest choice! I know some dogs just WON'T take pills without a little something yummy to go with it. I hope she does okay.

I am going to try that in the morning. I think that will work. I hope that will work. We have tried it with hot dogs and other yummy food but the only thing that has worked in the past is cheese and salami. She is a crazy dog! Nic did put it all the way in the back of her throat and then hold her mouth shut and she was still able to push it back out LoL. Kimber on the other hand I just toss it in with his food and he doesn't even notice.

just gave layla her first famotadine tablet. stuck it in a very small amount of her bland prescribed wet food. she inhaled it without a second thought. success.
